US companies call for global warming action

By DPA, [RxPG] Washington, Jan 23 - Ten US corporations have urged the government to set ambitious, mandatory caps on greenhouse-gas emissions, taking a stand against global warming that contrasts with President George W. Bush's voluntary approach.

The initiative from companies, which includes General Electric, DuPont, BP America and Alcoa, called for the US leadership to fight climate change and the creation of a US emissions trading market.

'We had some success with voluntary rules but this is not enough,' Lew Hay III, chief executive of the Florida Power and Light utility, told a news conference here Monday. 'We definitely need mandatory rules and we need it now.'

i love the fact that no one is going to do much until someone can profit of of it. although this emissions trading scheme could work, I think it is more probable that it won't do a damn thing but make some people rich

It's against govt policy and contrary to Fox News reports - there is no such thing as global warning. It's impossible

But... it might be govt policy if there is a dollar in it...

PS It's called the ostrich syndrome...

No you are right. After that iceage we had in the 70's and 80's we should of all learned our lesson. Oh and skin cancer I got from the ozone layer getting so large in the 90's, oh and all our top soil is now in the ocean and we cant grow food anymore to feed our families.. I have learned my lesson about not listening to scare mongering attempts in order to perpetuate government grants Ill tell you that..

Moi?? Doubt I'll be around to see the full effect.

The trickle-down effect has massive effects on environment/ecology and is already being recorded by relevent "experts". It's not just about some pics of polar bears in mass media...

Most folks prob won't bother until shorelines deteriorate and their condo complexes end up on the beach. Then the issue will be "damn, I lost a lot of money with that condo"

Flip side is there is a lot of research/monitoring going on in the background globally - not just into aspects of global warming effects, but overall sustainability and governments of many nations are already involved for better or worse. We have some projects with foreign government expertise and also contributing some land to oxygen emmission "shares" - tho it's not a perfect system, but at least a start.

The few nations not involved so far are late in thinking about it - and most probably will have little option but to get a grip and pay their overall share of damage so far - and that bill sure is not cheap.

I honestly don't understand how more people don't see this a huge issue...If we don't protect our planet and it falls apart then nothing else will matter in the grand scheme of things...

Where you are now is a classic example of eco-deterioration and know of one area which is probably where Florida (the Glades) was 50+ years ago - an awesome place with very intense wildlife. Give it another 20 years and that whole area will be deteriorated and converted into a mass gated community with riverside docks for boats and $5m homes - and the wildlife will have long gone or died off.

Something which has been a total education to me was being involved with people who had a clue - biologists, sustainabilty master planners etc. Some of the guys we involved have awesome creds - ranging from work in Galapagos, the Amazon basin to growing greens in the desert (a project involving 3000 people which got international awards). It is amazing what they can propose which not only reduces overall consumption/waste, but actually increases lifestyle aspects - both for current generations and (a timescale "standard") seven generations ahead.

Governments have spent good money getting reports/guidance from these "experts" and the common response when presenting their findings to eg politicians/leaders was "It won't happen while I'm in power, so...." But, that has been changing and an acceptance that bad news on the eco front can have an adverse effect on commerce and money. Who would have guessed that would have an effect on a change in policy-making?? *lol*
