I have bunk beds if you want to move in with me, but I get the top bunk!

im born and bred NYC...

trust me, if theres one thing about it, its that you will NOT find a cheap apt.

depending on where you want to live, we have Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island..

If you want to be close to the action and also find a good place to live at, Brooklyn is your best bet.
If you have some cash to spend, say the cheapest $1200/mo for a one bedroom, and you dont wanna use gas, Manhattan is your best bet. It's at the center of all the action and you can use mass transit ($1.50) to almost anywhere in the metro area, or you can spend it on cab, either way you get to the hot spots really quick.

If i were you, i'd get a roommate and either rent in brooklyn or manhattan in the village.

Have fun ;]

Oh and just a reminder... if you smoke cigarettes, right about now would be a fine time to quit, because we're at $7.50 a pack in most areas.. happy hunting

in the us, ny and boston are the best places to live in. both have lots of atmosphere and are full of things to do. still deciding between the two, will probably try them both.

Ya gotta love Nina, she's just so damn sweet isn't she!

If you are looking for an apartment in NY this is where to start The Village Voice

This is where all of the natives start their apartment searches. Before you start you have to understand that you will not find anything that is close to the city that is 'nice' for less than $1,400 a month. When I say nice I mean a 1 bedroom or a studio with no roaches. Being from California you should also look at New Jersey. It is very close and in some cases somewhat closer than some NY boroughs. If you have a car you can be a little more choosey. Understand that the rent in NY is high but thats because it isn't necassary to own a car. As a matter of fact it's a completely unnecassary expense. You will definitely find cheaper apartments in New Jersey that are nicer and newer than the ones you will find in NY that are the same distance away from Manhattan... but gas & insurance is higher than where you live and there is a $6 toll everythime you come into the city so it equals out.

If you need to know anything else give me a shout 15297059 5

Im in NJ, next to ShortHills, and Union around 25-30 mins from NYC. Around here, you can get a nice two bedroom apartment for around $800...you can catch the train right into the city from Shorthills, millburn, and a bunch of other towns. Takes around 25 mins by train, cause there are around 3-5 stops...nice and relaxing. Beats the drive, and most of the time the people on the trains are business people so theres not much trash. Used to be able to see the towers from my town...its a shame. I remember going to the local point at night, and seeing the beautiful towers all lit up. A few days after 911 I came home, and was able to see the smoke still rising. Sad day.

there are actually some nice places in brooklyn that run for $750/mo-$1100/mo, from 1 bedroom - 3 bedrooms, most are furnished..
I think they are listed in the local papers like The NY Times, New York Post and The Daily News.. Dont foget the Voice if you wanna hit up the city.

Ok thanks for the suggestions... I figured the Villiage Voice was the first place to look... Decisions Decisions! Last time I went up there I told myself I could live away from the city and keep my car -- but in reality I spent all my time in NYC ;) Keeping my car in Brooklyn was a total pain in the ass with the musical chairs parking bullshit -- on the other hand it's nice to have the car because you never know when you'll want to *escape*

Roseyatrid: That bunkbed idea sounds like fun... ICQ me :p

Sounds like a great Idea. I am work in a real estate firm and yes there are still good apartments to be found. I can find you one with out a fee. Hit me up on icq and lets talk I'm always looking to meet people in the biz in my area.

Some hints to find a good apartment - look outside the city. I currently live in the Bronx about 20 minutes by subway to midtown Manhatten. My place is huge ( by NY statndards ) and affordable. Look for a roomate at www.craigslist.org in the NY area you can find some good deals.

How do you go grocery shopping in NY with no car?

Where I live (not NY obviously) I go once a week and I end up with a fair amount of stuff. I can load it all in my car and head home though.

Do you take a cab and pile all your stuff in it or what?

I'm not sure if I speak for everyone here but most of the people I know don't do bulk shopping. We go and get smaller amounts at a time. You gotta remember that we have the widest selection of restaurants and take out so we eat out a lot. Waaaaay more than any other city. People who live further out go shopping but those of us that live more centrally don't shop as much.

Every now and then I will take a couple of freinds to Costco (wholesale groceries) though. It's kinda like a group expedition.

Hey, don't feel confined to the ghetto uptown, there's cheap ghetto apartments all around New York! There's the Hasidic Jew Ghetto in Brooklyn, the Russian ghetto in Queens, The Chinese Ghetto in Queens, The General Purpose Ghetto in the Bronx, and I'm sure there might be a Ghetto on Staten Island but no one ever goes there so I wouldn't know what it is!
