Question for dog owners with nice cars.

I will admit, I am not totally comfortable transporting my dog around in my car as I have seen what his claws can do to human flesh

and I am afraid of what he may accidentally do to my leather seats.

What do you do? Just use a blanket, or do they make something nice for putting on seats when you have the dog, that can be easily tossed in the trunk when transporting people?

I bought a kirkland bed pillow for Ginger in the car... as long as I've had that, and I keep a window cracked for her, she leaves my leather alone.

1. I clip my dog's claws regularly.

2. One of those really thick woven horse blankets is the best thing going for covering a nice back seat for the pooch.

Oh, and regarding point 1, it used to be a breeze to clip his nails, but in recent years since he's gotten so old he's also gotten quite crotchety about it and tends to want to bite... so I bought him a muzzle (which he hates even worse than getting his claws clipped). It makes the process a lot easier though, and I mean a LOT easier.

I guess I can get something like this for the car.

We don't have a lot of horses around here.

Shit man, you don't need to live in the dude ranch belt to buy a horse blanket (it's just a name for the type of blanket it is, any thick weave blanket will do)

If one of those covers from that site are big enough to cover your back seat go for it, they look okay.

Similar to this.

Can you fit a crate large enough for him in the backseat? A crate is the plastic dog cage you use for airline travel.

I suggest this for a couple of reasons:

1) It's great for a dog to have a crate. If they're not forced in to it, they'll most likely decide it's a great little place of their own. All three of my dogs love their crates and go in them all the time. It's also handy if they ever need to take a flight, they'll already be used to their travel cage.

2) An animal that is free and unrestrained in the car, is like a child without a seatbelt. Be a shame to lose your pet in an accident.

I spent $100+ on the carrier I got him for his flight to LA. Unfortunately, he has outgrown it and the next size up would require I put him in the trunk or drag him behind me in a trailer.

I understand what you are saying though, although I highly doubt I could get him to agree to wearing a seatbealt and shoulder harness.

Yeah I hear you. Trunk or dragging behind is obviously not going to cut it.

Maybe just try a moving blanket, you know the thick ones movers use. They're fairly cheap and thus you can easily replace it when it gets ripped, stained, etc.

One of those moving blankets work well and you can fold it up and put it in the trunk. Costco sells huge dog beds for cheap.

Yeah, I was wondering just how long it would take Buddy to get used to the idea that he was going to have to sit up for all road trips.

When my 70 pound chow/shephard got hit by a car, I had just bought my new car and had no choice but to take him straight to the vet in the backseat. Luckily the blood spewing from his mouth came out of the leather. Surprisingly enough, none got on the carpet.

He's all healed up now btw. It happened a few months back. Broken leg and his upper lip/snout area got a little separated from his gums. He's a tough sumbich tho...

I have one very similar to that one for my pittie. I have never had any difficulty putting it on him or strapping him into the car. They are able to lay down with these as well, they are not totally restrictive

Cool, does this attach with the regular shoulder/lap belt that comes in a normal passenger car?
