Anyone know much about laptop memory? My replacement 1 gig stick didn't work

I've got 2 512mb PC2700 DDR memory in it... says this on each stick

PC2700S - 25331 - AO 512MB DDR PC2700 CL2.5

I'm trying to upgrade to 1.5 gigs by putting in a 1 gig stick.. the 1 gig stick says.

1GB PC2700 CL2.5 200-Pin SODIMM

the laptop supports 1.5 gigs so i dont know what the problem would be other than some difference in the ram that i'm not noticing...

Do you need to check any bios settings?

Is the memory new? Could be defective.

Hmmm, good idea but I don't think that's the problem with mine I have a gateway MX7515 and for some strange reason they only give you access to one of the ram sticks for upgrading.

Had a look at the bios.. doesn't seem to be any settings I can change regarding ram or ram detection.

When the new stick is in the laptop tries to boot up but nothing shows up on the screen... it tries twice and turns off. If I did get the right type of memory it could just be a defective stick, i'll probably just take it in to the place i bought the ram at tomorrow and get someone to figure it out for me.
