Business thread: is Google PR dead?

This SEO consultant Im talking to says PR is dead. Right now I'm paying for links on similar sites to mine in hopes of getting PR. Its been 2 months now and Im still at 1/10, even thought my site is loaded with relevant content.

I don't know if I should pull those links and spend that money instead promoting my site, or leave it there and eventually get a higher PR.
I dont really understand what PR in terms of actual results, does it get you more traffic?

Build traffic, not PR. High pagerank is the effect of success, not the cause.

PR is just one of many factors that can effect your rankings. Google can crank it's importance up or down. Right now it's pretty far down in the grand scheme of things.

PR is only important because some people place such a high value on it for trades and such. As far as the SERPs go, it's really not important, no.....I have PR5 sites that rank poorly and PR2 sites (even a PR0 at the moment) that rank fine. I think some people put a little too much emphasis on it.

Don't focus on increasing your pagerank focus on increasing your rankings. Pagerank is next to useless when it comes to making money, its only use is for surfers to know how "relevent" google has judged the site to be. The only people who should worry about pagerank are the people who sell links but only because they can charge more for higher PR links to people who think a pr8 link will increase the sites earnings/traffic.

It is not dead IMHO, it still means something for ranking but it's just a minor factor nowadays.

It's most important value is in my opinion the fact that if you have high PR you'll easier get involved into benefical link exchange schemes because people are more eager to exchange links with a high PR site instead of being eager to exchange links with a high quality relevant site.

it's only good if you know what you are doing, if you don't, you could have PR8 site and still not rank well for anything...

PR is not dead, do not underestimate the power of PR, as it shows really how your site is popular in the eyes of Google, higher PR means you get more links, which means your site is more popular than those with lower pr ;)

Unfortunately as usual people are talking about two different things here

Page Rank is very important to Google - its the basis for their whole algorithm - and is made up of hundreds of factors - but unless youve been studying it for some time you would never be able to come close to guessing a pages "page rank"

PR - (what you see in that little green bar or on some seo website) is meaningless - its just a nice little graphic google makes up to appease the clueless webmasters so that they can catch them selling links - its a snapshot about 3 months behind when Google actually updates Page Rank(on almost a daily basis) - and has been this way for over 2 years

As was said earlier - build a quality site with good content and you'll get the rankings in the SEs you want

The toolbar PR typically is only updated every 3 months or so, so you'll need to wait longer, especially since an update just occured.

What is the PR of the links you're buying?

Only having a couple links into your site isn't going to help raise your PR by very much if at all.

Buying a link (or getting some free ones) from a PR4+ site can be very helpfull in getting your site/page spidered quickly. So even if it's not helping much with raising your PR, it's still helpfull in getting the SEs coming around frequently.

Getting traffic to your site, increasing your PR, at the end of the day it all comes down to the same thing. Increasing the number/quality of links pointing to your site from other places. Focus on that.

It usually takes 3 months for PR to kick in unless you do something radical. We have hundreds of top listed sites and can help your as well if this doesn't pan out. Every client has got a pr 4 or higher from our program: http://www.dwhs.com/search-engine-optimization.htm

its not dead, you'll still need high quality incoming links with relevant anchor text to compete if your hoping to generate traffic through google..

its all about content and links.. google really is that simple..

but incoming links first.. do a search for "miserable failure" on google and you'll see what i mean..
