Youtube will go down in internet history as one of the worst purchases EVER

Think about it, I know it may seem like I'm just echoing Mark Cuban but, youtube was built upon copyrighted material. I'm not trying to put it in the same category of Kazaa or Napster. But just go to Youtube and type in your favorite comedian, your going to get copyrighted stand-up footage from either HBO or Comedy Central.

But anyway, this purchase will go down as one of the grossly overpaid acquisitions EVER

I don’t know if this was a bad purchase or not. From one point of view copyrighted materials could or would make it a bad purchase. But since Google and others online have already started talking deals with movie & music producers plus all the legit amateur video footage put online, it will be worth it. The data alone, all those stats, the users, countries, what they click on, what they comment/vote on, do and don’t like.. The statistical data over the next many years will be worth a lot more than they paid. Google is a statistical data center first, then a se engine and all the other bs follows.

overpaid? it was an all stock deal. Market-cap increased by more than the value of the deal. Google got PAID to buy youtube.

therefore. you are wrong.

Well, I don't know about that. YouTube will help google control more traffic, and they can afford it even if they lose money off it.

But maybe the adsens stuff will do very good? You never know..

Maybe, maybe not.

Google's market cap increased.

And, even if they have to remove some content, so what? They still have gobs of traffic.

I wouldn't bet against Google. They are smart guys.

I think one of the main philosophies behind the purchase was simple userbase.

We've seen it before - myspace getting sold for rediculous fortunes.

Time and time again companies are learning that they CAN'T create instant communities and projects that are viral, simply because they ARE large corporations.

Google may have spent a fuckload on YouTube, but they don't care, because they can afford it. Suddenly, they've got the userbase, the infrastructure, the brand - everything - of a site, and phenomenom - internet video sharing - that has eluded every major company since broadband.

This will become a bandwagon that media companies cannot afford to miss - already seen by the smarter media firms and film companies that are posting their own content..

You could easily argue that it was bought at a perfect time, by a company that has the backing. No doubt some will see this as an oppurtunity to sue big - but google is probably one of the only companies that can successfully defend against this.

If, on the other hand, this turns into a failure - not only will it take us all back a few internet years, but it will be a loss for everyone who participates in open media sharing.

Reality is - human nature does not comform with the business models that are currently in place around media and music. Times are changing. Suddenly, there's a solution that is established, which could finally bridge that gap.

If you're simply looking at this on a $ value, then you've missed the point.

The fact remains that there is still a ton of copyrighted material being posted by regular users to you tube"

I read that Google knew what it was getting into, and $500 million of the $1.6bn purchase was for litigation and settlements. They've been negotiating and settling just fine with major companies so maybe it won't be as bad as you think.

Then look at the presence you've made on the internet.

I think they might know a little more than you.

Your arguement is dumb as fuck....
I've been in business since 2001 so I feel I have the right to make an opinion on it......

They set out to make a search engine...
I set out to make $100 for a new pair of sneakers....
A few hundred thousand dollars later and I've learned quite a bit

You'll have to wait for the details to come out. $500 million of the purchase was set aside for possiblie lawsuits. They also were able to give out $50m in Google stock to some of the biggest content producers in the world to get them to shut up. The beauty of it is that they own Google stock now, and the success of YouTube will directly effect their stock.

The deal is extremely complicated guys. They didn't just hand over a check for 1.6 billion and said thanks.

Wanna be porn guy?
We can bet money RIGHT NOW
That my site is better than your best site
We can assign a ratings system for traffic, earnings, and visual appeal and I will MURDER your best site with my 1 site.

Besides that....
Google is highly overrated, their search results are GARBAGE on a good day
