I agree, there whole video section is pointless. They did it to protect there position not to make much more money at this point. I heard Yahoo was thinking about buying it so they moved in with a high offer to grab it quickly.

Still worst purchase the internet has seen yet.

DjSap 11-10-2006 04:41 PM

i dont know i usually appreciate the non copyright videos more on youtube...however it is kind of annoying when they pull copyrighted clips...

woj 11-10-2006 04:44 PM

They know what the are doing... I'm sure they spent more $$$ and resources researching this accusation than you will ever make in your life time... so yea, it's very likely that they must have overlooked the minor detail that most of the content is copyrighted...

Kimo 11-10-2006 05:18 PM

nah youtube was a good purchase, and i stand by that

I think he successfully achieved that goal long time ago, right now he's in the process of making sure he goes down in history as the biggest idiot to ever post on GFY. :)

YouTube was purchased for many reasons....most of which were more to do with preventing others from gaining on their market share for ppc advertising. Sometimes you have to burn some cash to hold your position.

Was it potentially a dumb purchase in that in 2 years it might be a legal mess? yes

Was it a dumb purchase though when you consider all the factors? NO, not at all. Look at it from Google's perspective...

They have a surplus of profits right now so they can burn cash or issue a dividend. So they decide to spend the cash. In purchasing YouTube they guarantee two things...

1) They assist their hold on the PPC market
2) They prevent a competitor from acquiring it

AND...on top of this they have a number of potential outcomes...

1) They show an "effort" to control copyrighted material and YouTube continues to grow on its current path

2) YouTube has to remove copyrighted material but remains popular with the Break.com crowd

3) Google partners with Hollywood and creates the first legitimate online On-Demand tv show and movie website.

I would foolish not to bring up the 4th possibility; that hollywood goes hard after YouTube with an agressive lawsuit to get it completely shut down and google needing to fork over a ton of cash. However, I find this to be the most likely scenario because if there is money to be made in this market and hollywood can be in on it...then they will be.

This purchase protects Google's hold on the market; and the upside versus downside is "good enough" to be optimistic about the actual down the road value. It might blow up in their face; but they had the money to burn and by burning it they protected themselves.

The Yankees do this all the time to get players off waivers so that Boston can't have them. This is nothing new

I said exactly what I was talking about...

Heh. You make George W. look like the resident mensa authority.
Just a little FYI, copyright is instant, so everything on youtube is 'copyright'.

Wht others are pointing out and you fail to realise, is that some is posted legally, by the copyright owners.

We don't expect you to listen. Don't make me post logs of you crying and threatning to kill me because I called you a cunt back in the day.

marketsmart 11-10-2006 08:26 PM

we will see if it works for them in the years to come...

Platinum Lantern 11-10-2006 08:40 PM

I'm getting blasted for my ability to see down the road...
Years from now people will say, what a FLOP

vod 11-10-2006 09:33 PM

Google was paying youtube alot for google adsense rev-share. so now they don't have to pay that out plus they were able to get alot of the copywritten material agreements to share it ; - )

they will get the rest to follow and allow it's content to be freely shared on youtube with an agreement, becuase to the HUGE distribution youtube and google brings to the table ; - )

advertising/agreements will keep youtube moving and shaking up the copyright world, some will sue and are, some will settle and have, tohers just can't beat them so they JOIN'em....
google is a rare bread of tech's that have HUGE traffic/reach and can almost pull off anything they want and put enough money behind it to make it work, just cause they can ;

;

therefore. you are wrong.

Yeah, that's the beauty of the whole thing

Drake 11-10-2006 09:56 PM

Like Dollarmansteve said, it didn't cost Google a red cent to buy YouTube. It was keen move. But who could expect less from the Google ppl.
