U.S. man ordered to wear "sex offender" T-shirt

U.S. man ordered to wear "sex offender" T-shirt

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Delaware judge on Friday ordered a man who twice exposed himself to a 10-year-old girl at his workplace to wear a T-shirt with the words: "I am a registered sex offender" in bold letters, a prosecutor said.

Russell Teeter, 69, who pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent exposure, also was sentenced to 60 days in jail by Superior Court Judge Jan Jurden in Wilmington.

Deputy Attorney General Donald Roberts said he requested the unusual T-shirt punishment because he was concerned about Teeter exposing himself to children at the gardening business he runs with his wife.

"This is a unique way to let his customers know that he is a sex offender," Roberts told Reuters.

Roberts said Teeter had at least 10 prior convictions dating back to 1976 for exposing himself to children and had been diagnosed as a compulsive exhibitionist.

Teeter, who has 30 days to appeal the sentence, will have to wear the T-shirt at work for 22 months after he gets out of jail.

Teeter's attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

Other than the probability that there was a lot of "It's Sunday, we need someone for the stocks this afternoon lads", what was wrong with pillorying people? I suspect there was something quite valuable in criminals having to directly face the individual(s) and the community on which they preyed.

Another consequence of having the punishment of criminals handled more or less anonymously by the state, is that we don't really know whether someone ends up being sodomized in jail for a year after being arrested for shoplifting, or if someone who commits a vicious assault gets away with a couple of years on an over-worked probation officer's list. We make assumptions, based largely on our own prejudices, as to whether or not the relationship between crime and punishment is reasonable.

Then there is the reality of recidivism. We all know as a more or less abstract concept, that the majority of those convicted and later released go on to offend again. That may not be a reason to bring back some of the more "imaginative" practises of the past, but it's a subject which doesn't get enough debate because the way we handle criminals these days makes it too easy to ignore such issues.

If somebody is enough of a danger to wear such a shirt it begs the question why they aren't still in jail.

Good idea huh?

Ever read Scarlett's letter?

Ever see a WWII reel of a German ghetto, where the jews were forced to wear the star of david?

Maybe we should have shirts for all criminals.

How about "I'm a dangerous drunk" for people convicted of drunk in public.

I don't totally disagree, but when we start somewhere (however horrible it is), its a slippery slope for the rest.

You don't think that someone who has exposed themselves to a 10 year old is someone who we need to worry about?

Nothing to do with the offense (tho that may be the core issue), any judge who considers he has the right to dictate what anyone will wear (other than a prison suit) is an ass who does not need to be on any bench. These idiots make a mockery of the judicial system.

If an offender is a danger to the public, they need to be in custody.

the best part is he's a repeat offender, why isn't he in jail? read that shit again tell me that doesn't make you sick he's done it two or three times recently and has done it in the past hrmm... i would say it's about time to throw his cousin fucking ass in jail, but wait lets put a t-shirt that says sex offender on it and throw him back into society so he can do it again... YES! more children get to be exposed to this scumbag. What is our court system thinking i love how you can go to jail for 10 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed yourself but hey you can whip out your cock and tramatize a child for the rest of their life and get put away for a few months..

Jail/conventional methods of punishment do not work for people with these types of issues. Public humiliation tactics are more powerful in preventing some things from happening but not all.

I think more judges should be creative and effective in their rulings, instead of just fining or imprisoning people. The judicial system is too black and white in this country.

I honestly don't believe there is anything that will cure or change "sex offenders" and pedos. These people are mentally and emotionally fucked beyond all help.

A slap on the wrist aka 60 days in jail isn't a major threat to anybody. You get less time for rape in the US than you do for spamming. Instead of trying to fix the unfixable, we need to focus on preventing it from happening or desiring it to happen.

The world isn't "coming to anything." We are actually more civilized now than ever before, if you compare the present to the past. We've come a long way, but we have a long, LONG way to go.

There is a similair situation in reality. This one rapist (child murderer I believe) had the name of his victim tattoo'd on him by the prisioners where he is serving his time.

I'm all for alternative punishments.

Can anyone here say that the current system is working? No. New things must be tried.

Bring back public spankings. I'd think twice about a drunken night out if it meant a public flogging versus 12 hours in a tank.

Prison is no deterrent for hardened criminals.

OK, so this magical shirt is going to come with some kind of auto-censoring device from the future, so that when he exposes himself it automatically blurs the part he exposes? How is wearing this shirt going to do anything? How is it going to protect children, especially those who have not learned how to read yet, much less those who do not know what a 'sex offender' is? How is this shirt going to do ANYTHING AT ALL other than make the judge look like an idiot? There needs to be some real punishment here, wearing a t-shirt doesn't count and a t-shirt won't do anything to stop this guys actions or warn potential future victims.

I don't have any kids (that I know of)... couldn't care less. But a guy who is apt to bust a cap in your ass? I think we'd probably want to know about that guy, wouldn't you?

Exactly.

Over here we seem to take pride in letting everyone know that there are X amount of offenders in our community's, rather than keep them locked up...
