Choose: Muay Thai or Tae Kwon Do

			Hey Guys,

I stopped doing any sort of martial arts training, or exercise at all about 8 years ago and got fat... about 190lbs. (I'm 5'6") About 5 months ago I started exercise with some decent weights and dropped most of the fat and picked up some muscle again to get to a pretty solid 175lbs. Now, I want to jump back on the martial arts thing again but I've got a problem. I would ideally like to do Muay Thai for the obvious reasons, but the closest club is about 30 minutes drive away. The next closest martial arts club is TKD and about 5 minutes drive. Soooo... what should I do!? 30 minutes drive and Muay Thai, or 5 minutes drive and TKD? |

I'm not really familiar with both martial arts. However, I think they can be both very effective exercising routine.

If you want to fight Muay Thai, no question. Kickboxing rocks, even if you just like to spar.

If you just want to learn a martial art, Tae Kwon Do. 2c

TKD. However, you should first learn to appreciate "jogging" as a good exercise going to the TKD club.

Don't waste your time with TKD AKA as McDojo's. Drive the 30 minutes for Muay Thai, you train large muscle groups, and can use in a real fight. There's a reason why MMA fighters have Muay Thai as part of their training.

i hate tai kwon do with a passion. its not a "martial art" - its a "sport" and one that has very little to do with effective and useful fighting techniques.

Muay Thai is better in every way. Thats what I think, I use to do it and its pretty tough to train.

But it depends on the use you are going to give to it.

I did teakwondo for about 4 years a couple of years ago and I love it. Make sure you train WTF and not ITF. ITF is boring, more karate like no-tuching thingy. WTF is what you see on TV and in the olympics with guys in vests kicking the crap outta each other. Cool beans.

Although Muai thai is the ultimate exercising sport and over all very good it might not be worth the 30 minute drive if you got a taekwondo club so close by.. just my ![]() |

Muay Thai, hands down. TKD is fun and will work you out but not in the same way Muay Thai will. Plus it's way more practical. Plus it's a different kinda cardio. I've seen marathon runners come in for a Kickboxing or MMA class and be spent way quicker than the regulars there.

if yuou're looking to do something just for fun and exercise and not considering taking something seriously, do the TKD.

Also consider how valuable is your time?? do you have lots of free time? 5 min or 30 min..huge difference for a "hobby" as opposed to something serious. I love my muay thai and just recently got back into it as well.

Most here are not talking from experience, so take most comments with a pinch of salt.

Here's the FACTS... I am going for my Black Belt in (WTF - the one they do in the Olympics) TaeKwonDo early next month so I feel I am qualified to comment on this (and I might not say what you think I'm going to say)... My verdict? Depends what you want it for. If you're looking to fight, in real life, forget TaeKwonDo, to put it simply, it's a joke. It's true what the nay sayers say, it has become a sport. Now if you get a GOOD class, with a great instructor, TaeKwonDo can be fun, you'll meet great people NOT interested in kicking the shit out of each other, you'll get fit, become more flexible, make good friends, massively increase your confidence etc. You really will. But if you're going to be spending 6 months in Jail it ain't gonna help much in the prison showers with "Bubba". Yes, you WILL become a better fighter and you will learn how to have awesomely powerful kicks and be FAST, but using that knowledge on the street might not be the best thing to do. For example, if I'm in a bar brawl, I'm unlikely to use *anything* I learned in TKD (even though we are taught self defense techniques too). So, sorry for long post, if you're looking to learn how to effectively FIGHT, go for Muay Thai. Hands down. Worth the drive. No contest. If however, you're looking for a more all-round experience, consider TKD. I'd try a session or 2 of both and see which you like best. Hope this helps in some way. |

I was talking with Tai Chi instructor the other day and made the mistake of telling him that Tai Chi wasn't a martial art.

Kind of like in that movie "Fools Rush In" where they tell the guy's parents that "Presbyterianism isn't a real religion" He almost bit my head off. Not physically of course, but I could feel large amounts of negative chi directed towards me. ![]() |

The "obvious reasons" are that Muay Thai is more effective both as a martial art and as a fitness sport.

I have done over 10 years of TKD in various forms and JJ. Have never been to a Muay Thai class before but know what it's like. I guess I answered it for myself. An extra hour of driving a couple of times a week is worth learning something "real". First class is today, I'll post back here afterwards to let you all know how it went... hrmm... maybe I should take some photos and see how it changes my body in 6 months. |

Chinese have conquered a lot of shit. Go with kung fu. Then again, Thailand's never been conquered (the only asian nation, I believe), so that's something to consider. Either way TKD is Korean and they're gonna get nuked soon so why bother. |

well... today i went to a muay thai class with my friend. first time ever... have been wanting to for many years. my background is in karate although i haven't trained at all in the last 7yrs.

i like it... very practical and realistic tai kwon do = gay and retarded and goofy... even more so if its a tkd guy fighting someone who actually knows how to fight. just happened to see this on Youtube.com muay thai vs tai kwon do... kinda sums them up https://youtube.com/watch?v=JcHKIUuDbCI |

LMAO that's not even a question if you are talking about the actual use of the art in fights.

Go for Thai boxing all the way it will get you way further. Muay Thai and a good grapling base can give you the edge over pretty much every striker.
