Okay, a friend of the family has a small web design "company" in a small town. She was contracted to redo a church website. Now, this lady has contacted me a couple of times to help her with some basic HTML when her copy of FrontPage mutilates some code and messes up her tables. Easy enough.
She emailed me a couple of days ago about a page that she couldn't fix. The tables were screwed so as usual I fixed the code in a couple of minutes. Then she tells me that she was paid $1500 to do this chuch's site. It is NOTHING but FrontPage HTML and some clipart from one of those clipart CDs.
The church wants her to update every few days and those updates take her 6-8 hours a week!!! She's upset because she's "only" getting $250/mo to update the site even though it takes her upwards of 32 hours a week to do it (since frontpage keeps messing up table HTML on her
).
I decided to help her out a little. I wrote a quick PHP script that would take a template and insert content stored in text files into the middle column since that's all her updates entail anyway. I then used mod_rewrite to hide the query string and make each page look like a static URL just for the sake of SEs which I doubt they are concerned with anyway.
Now to update the site, she doesn't have to edit anything but a text file and it's nearly impossible to break the page's HTML since frontpage won't be able to dick with the main template code. She's convinced that I am the greatest webmaster that ever lived. I now have an offer to work on a hardware store's site for a ridiculous amount of money considering how little work it would be for me.
All of you webmasters, designers, coders...look locally for some odd jobs. Adult webmasters are picky and demanding. What we consider mediocre is pure genius to people who aren't in the business. You can make a killing if you pick up a little work on the side from people who aren't as savvy as professional porn slingers. They'll pay you well for something you can do with your eyes closed.
