WHere can I get the codecs to play avi videos?

I just bought some vidoes and theyre .avi, and it just says "error downloading codecs".
It plays the audio, but not the visual.
Anyone know where I can get the codecs for them? I'm using windows xp
I tried to open them in windows movie maker but they wont open there either.
I also just tried DivX and that didnt work eithe,r it played the audio but not the visual.

Get VLC Media Player - it plays any video you throw at it.

if you right click on the file and go into properties etc you should see the exact codec the videos were encoded with , then just google away

DO NOT USE K-LITE or other codec "packs"

Only install the codecs you NEED, as installing codec packs will cause conflicts alot of the time ...

Google GSpot codec appliance ... this will let you right click any file and tell you EXACTLY which codecs you need ...

Remember that AVI is only a container extension ... you need to use GSpot to determine if the contained file was rendered with DivX, Xvid, or whatever ...

FFDshow is a very good open-source DivX/Xvid/mp4 encoder and decoder, and is about 75% lighter on your system resources than DivX codecs

with VLC open click Audio and see if the audio track is disabled or not.. Do the same for the video track. Something it disables it for some reason.. Needless to say, VLC will play just about anything.

The biggest problem with codec packs, is they are assembled by script kiddies with HACKED old-version codecs usually ...

Another very good program for video is ZOOM PLAYER ( www.inmatrix.com )
Blight has done a very good job building a NO BULLSHIT video player, and once installed, it will tell you which codecs your system needs for both video and audio, as well as where to get them!

Once you have installed the list of codecs (no hacks either!), your system will play 99.9% of all audio and video formats!

When I build a new rig (whether be it for myself or a client), I install Zoom Player and the codecs almost right after the OS - saves alot of hassles later on
