Newbie Graphics Help Please!

Ok so im working in photoshop 6, trying to get this chick cut out to go on one of my new avs designs.

I'm mad new at doing this type of thing, i used to always have someone helping me with this shit, but now im doing it myself.

Ok heres the examples....

Picture after i hacked it up with the Selector Wand

Picture after i thought i was finished hacking it up

Is there an easier way to extract these people?? I know the graphics guy that used to come over figured it out...but i still have yet to.

Use the eraser tool on a transparent background. lessen the hardess of the edges for a smoother look, and take your time. There is no easy way to do it, design takes a little time homie.

Good luck.

Yeah, he's right. That is about the only way to get a quality cut out.

Sometimes when I see photo sets with a bland same color background I get them just for the purpose of easy editing, I wish someone sold transparent background pics per pic

Making the picture extremely large won't help you at all. Keep it at its original size or even smaller, worry about the fine details once the girl is cut out of the background. A pixel or background here and there wont hurt anything.

It would be far easier to just magnify the pic up a bit, maybe 2X or 3X and use the polygonal lasso tool to draw around the picture and then erase or mask the selection. It's much more easier and precise than using the eraser. Once you start with the polygonal lasso you'll never use the eraser for cutting out a picture ever again. And remember it was my advise when you do ;)

P.S. If you are erasing the background instead of masking it out, create a duplicate of that picture underneath the orginal picture. Will help you to refine your cutout in the end and you wont have to worry about the history.

Use the lasso tool to quickly select around the image you want first then just drag on to a new transparent background and follow Fletch's advice

Or you could use the tool that was designed for that kind of tasks... ;)

In Photoshop 6 go to image/extract and try that one... Go to the help menu for help about using it, it's a lot easyer than me trying to explain it...

enlarging the photo just takes too much time,,

use the polygonal lasso tool around the image,,,

then goto select -- inverse -- then hit the delete key

then magnify and erase the fine details

pr0, all you gotta do is goto your image menu and use your extract tool. it takes some time to do the outline but it's usually worth it. if i'm using the magic wand tool i only select large areas of color to make it easier to distinguish with the extract tool. after you're done doing your outline with the extract tool fill the area with the paint bucket and hit OK. background is gone. ;)

I did one recently and invented my own method. I was using Paint Shop Pro. I set up a very large airbrush tool set to spray the background color the image would go on (black, in that case), and I sprayed as close as I dared without touching the outline of the image. Then I magnified the image and went around the ouline with progressively smaller airbrushes. In the end, I used a solid paintbrush to push the background color right up to the edge of the image. Maybe it's not the greatest knockout job ever done, but it looks okay, I think (http://www.girlsdotcom.com/tour0.htm).
