Anyone Running Windows Vista as their main OS?

Been thinking of running Vista as my main OS.
My Computer is plenty powerfull enough. One of the reason is I want to go to Vista is so I can run 4 gigs of ram, as xp limits to 3.

I know its RC2 now, but does it update like windows update so that when it is released I can just buy a copy of it and go from the timed beta to the actual release. I would hate to have to reformat now going to xp and then again in a few months to go from vista to vista.

Also, if you are running it, how are you liking it?

XP64bit allows you to utilize all 4GB you will have to use the 64bit version of Vista too. The 32 bit limits you to 3gb.

good for you, the 512 stick that macs come with must be lonely then.

I have no real use for more then 4 gigs of ram, I do pretty good with the 2gb I have now, but want jsut a bit more to help things along.

4x1gb is better then 2x1gb + 2x512mb sticks.

PS, have fun paying out the ass for 16gb of ram for your mac.
and as an fyi, most newer boards support 8gb (mine included) but the 2gb sticks are still more then I care to spend on something I dont need. And all the dual cpu boards support 8-16 gb

Macs come with what you tell them to come with, there's this neat little pulldown menu that actually allows you to add and/or subtract things, it's very technical I am sure...

Mac users tend to make a little bit more money, that's why we can buy Macs and continue to be able buy Macs... so the pinch on the wallet is not so great as it may be to the lower income people.

lol, I just dont like the interface of the Mac's. So that alone keeps me from owning one.

So can anyone answer my original post without this being a mac vs windows debate?

wow, you're just one MOTHERFUCKING FANBOY IDIOT. If you had a FUCKING clue you would know that MACS are limited to about are limited to 3.4/3.6 GB as well, it has nothing to do with windows or macs, its a fucking limit for the fact that 32 bit systems are limited to 4gb. however to make things faster the I/O subsystem is mapped into the physical address space of the ram, so videomemory, basic I/O etc steal addresses from those 4 Gb.

And to the OP, been running vista x86 RC2 for a few weeks now and everything is just great

I looked at it, and if I was switching machines I would likely install the new OS directly to avoid issues. The RC is pretty much exactly what is going to be in the commercial box, and you don't have to rush out to buy it on the first day it comes out.

Ive asked this several times, but haven't got a good answer yet. What can you do on a mac, that I cant do on a PC? I can name many many things I can do on a pc, that you can't do on a mac. Also there are motherboards available that support 16GB for pc too. 32 bit only supports 3gb. 64bit supports quite a bit more.

Without joining in the argument...

Macs and PCs do the same thing, it's just that with a mac they're done with so much more class and style. It's all about the user experience IMO. The whole OS is just nicer to use, simple menus, no BS, that kinda stuff.

What I also dig about Macintosh is the tight community vibe from having a smaller market share. Mac shareware also rocks.

I dunno, Mac users LOVE Apple and their prodcuts. I use Windows everyday and never felt any love toward Microsoft at any time.

right, but you gotta pay for it. But I agree it really does make Finder look like a half arsed POS.

If they don't fix the Finder for Leopard there's something seriuously wrong.

So I read through your list. You cite alot of programs that are mac only. Yet there are Pc programs that do the exact same thing. Give me 1 reason why Id want to buy a mac over a pc. Why I would want to deal with the incompatiblity issues, limited software etc.

Lets put it in tasks.

Video editing. I do this everyday on a pc with no problems at all.
Music editing. I do this everyday on a pc with no problems at all.
Photoshop. I do this everyday on a pc with no problems at all.
Gaming. I do this everyday on a pc with no problems at all.
Browsing. I do this everyday on a pc with no problems at all.
Dreamweaver I do this everyday on a pc with no problems at all.

Btw we have itunes lol.

There is just simply no task a mac can accomplish that I cant on a pc.

Almost every one you listed I had to laugh at, but I had to point these out.
Stability, I can almost always lock up a display mac at the stores, its not hard. The windows machines I might be able to make a program stop responiding, but that doesnt require a hard reboot.

Better user interface, now thast just a matter of opinion.

128x128 icons, are you serious? Sorry I dont need glasses, you might want to get your eyes checked though.

Multiprocessor, XP home... lol, ya its hard to cough up the 8 bucks more for pro.

iBullshit, man all that crap is useless.

CD burning... lol you can burn DVDs with WMP even.

blue tooth support... come on know, you know very well that XP has that too.

the dock, I'll take the much smaller start button thanks.

The hide command, are you serious? did you really list that?

Quicktime is shit, hardly anywhere buy apple.com uses it.

and why the fuck would i want to play a movie while its on the dock? please tell me how that could be even a little bit usefull.

I could have said something to every one of those, but didnt.
Not to mention you bitch about Windows being too flashy but list off several things for a mac that are "better" but are just flashy themself.
But then again most of those things you list have been part of windows powertools since 98.
And then top if off with the fact that Vista is way different then XP anyways, and because I am asking about running Vista, I have no idea why you are compairing everything to XP in the first place.

Why dont we compair vista to an 8 year old version of Mac OS?

OMG the "incompatibility issues" is so fucking 1993, surprised you didn't comment about the "one button mouse" (my mouse has 6 buttons and a scroll ball, and yes it's the standard mouse that come with the comp) .

It has nothing to do with what they can do, it all about how they get it done. PC are cumbersome and outdated. The new Vista is still way behind OS X, it's actually a pathetic attempt at trying to copy OS X.

I don't have annoying Anti-Virus or Spyware alerts popping up out of the blue, telling me everythign is ok, or not so well.

I can close every window on a program, but the program will continue to run. It doesn't quit the program until I tell it to quit.

With a click of my mouse I can spread out every single window I have open, mouse over it, it will tell me what that window is, and if I click on it, it will pull that window to the front.

Or if I hold down a key and press the Tab Button it will pull up a list of the programs icons and scroll thru them, from there I can quit that program or go to it, all without leaving the current program you are in.

Standard out of the box I can make a High Definition video into a pretty fucking good DVD with moving menus and music, no video cards to buy, no Firewire cards to buy, no software need, straight out of the box.

Out of the box I can make a photo book that will be sent to me, or lots of other crazy photo shit, without the need of logging into any website.

I also a video card (standard) that can run two 30" widescreen monitors.

voice recognition comes standard, I can say "start photoshop" and bam, photoshop starts, I can say "save file" and bam the file gets saved, plus hundreds of other commands. I could fucking make start Firefox and go to GFY.com everytime I told it go to go fuck itself if i wanted to. I say tell me a joke and the fucking computer tells me a joke, usually a knock knock which requires you to answer back.

I can use Automator to do shit that I don't even know what to do, I have yet to get into this program but it's pretty fucking sick what it will do. It can bascially take a file and run it through several programs I tell it to, to get an end result, then make a droplet for you, so all you have to do is drop a file or a folder of files onto the droplet and it fucking does it all while you go mow the fucking lawn or spend time with your kids.

Out of the box, I can plug my guitar into the comp and have a wide large variety of amp effex to chose from, throw in some drum tracks, or whatever, and fucking jam out.

If I was into podcasting, I would have a badass set of podcasting tools, including sound effects, voice editing, etc. Standard, out of the box, comes with it.

I could go on and on... I have no doubt your PC can do everything my Mac can do, it's just how it gets done that's the main difference.

So .... you can get every piece of software out there for mac that is available for windows? umm ya right Id say its maybe 30 to 40% if that. Im being generous. Everything you say xp cant do... guess what I can. 128x128 icons? Dude its in the settings on the desktop. I think you copied that list from about 4 years ago or something.

I dont have anything on my desktop anyways.

128x128 icons lmao

You think I copied, that list? No fucking shit I copied it... wow nothing gets by you PC guys.

You don't need every piece of software, that's the whole fucking point, most of the software you buy to make shit happen on XP is already built into OS X.

Name a program or two that I would need to do something, that is available for a PC but not for a Mac.

Pretty much every batch program I use for video is not available for mac. Its rare for any decent game released to be released for mac.

It comes down to this. I can build a machine for half what a mac costs and it will be faster than your mac. Bang for the buck on a mac blows period.

So basically you can't name one... you'd think at 30 - 40% you'd be able to name at least one program.

aico, when I looked at similarly priced laptops, dual core to dual code, the apples were about 50% more expensive, and they weren't built anywhere near as tough as the PC world machines.

When I looked at desktops, the results where similar.

Every year, the mac gets closer and closer to being a PC, more buttons on your mouse, microsoft software for office, and heck, now even Intel CPUs... I am trying to think what the next good PC thing is that Mac will try to take over and claim as their own.

Macs are very good machines, no doubt about it, but the price difference just doesn't justify the snooty attitude mac users all seem to have about their stuff.

That's funny since Windows was copied from Apple's OS ... Just like Vista is copied from OS X.

Your points are moot, and really it was a sad attempt, StickyFingerz has a better argument going.

But your opinion, even though you have your facts a little wrong, is always welcome.

wow aico is the kind of fan boy that pisses me off. Copies the apple page and speaks everything said in the commerials on TV.

Right now I have both a G3 and a G4 I use on a daily bases.. but guess what advanced submitter/dream submitter/etc dont work with those so thats why I have a widows box.

However OS X allows me to be writing some scripts for testing in a very close emulation to my current server setup while with a click of a mouse button I still have access to some sweet apps such as photoshop. It basically combined the need for a test machine and a dev machine for me. Now that the new programs are out for the intel machines that can emulate windows I am thinking of picking up a new mac.. i just need to know I can ditch the windows box.

Basically it comes down to is what tasks do you need to do, and is that machine able to do it.

When you take off the training wheels and get past submitting galleries, I am sure you can afford a G5 or maybe even a MacPro...

What the fuck is an Fanboy? Cuz I know both my ex and current girlfriend use that term about the guys who would come up to their booths at model shows and hang out... So, if that's your meaning, might want to try again.

Dont need to upgrade, the 2 machines I have serve the purpose i need them to. The G4 runs OS X server for the sole reason of learning it further my technical skills and the G3 runs everthing else I need it to do.

As for the gallery submitting, sorry I only work in adult part time. Its a way for me to make some extra beer/play money.. sorry I can be as L33t as you.

As for the fanboy comment, you preach the reason everone needs a mac, even though you have no fucking idea what they do. Seriously point out ONE thing you use the machine for that you use that cant be done on a windows machine, as I have yet to see this answer yet

Its not efficient if there are things you need to do that you cant, because its not a pc. Notice that almost everyone who posted they have a mac, ALSO still have a pc because there are things they cant do on a mac?
