:mad Thanks George Bush.

He came to town today and just fucked everything up, traffic, the airport and he was all over the TV and I couldn't watch my stories.

"Along with a private fundraiser, the president also made a public speech about his views on the state of education in the US."

Yea I wonder how much $$ he got from the private fundraiser.

Here's a link to the great speech. LMFAO

Bush cares a lot about our educational system. So much that he made 4.3 billion in cuts to the education system this year.

Bush terminated 99 programs in his 2006 budget, including a whopping 48 programs from the US Education Department for a savings of $4.3 billion. He wants to replace those with new initiatives costing $2.3 billion.

How about some vouchers instead of this billion dollar money pit?

Throwing money into the pit ain't the answer. How about vouchers so good teachers could be rewarded and there would be incentive to be good? mkay?

He cut spending on his own "no child left behind program". His new "reforming education" didn't include vouchers, doesn't help charter schools, and doesn't even touch special education.

His cuts also basically rape college students. Tuition has gone up 35% in his Presidency and he wants to kill the Perkins loan and has put a freeze on the Pell grant. He's also trying to make student loans have variable interest rates so that students can get fucked harder.

Billion dollar money pit? That's Iraq. I'm more than happy to throw money at education to ensure kids can go to college and we can build a smarter country. I guess some kids not going to college is worth it if Haliburton can pull in a few more million in no-bid contracts.

While vouchers help (vouchers were removed by Bush from his plan), you still need to pay these people some money. You just aren't going to get quality teachers for what they are paying. No matter what things you put in place for accountability (which include not dealing with unions), you still need to pay some money to bring in talent.

Bad teachers make the same as good teachers. Vouchers would not get passed, but not because of Bush. Do you really want to give bad teachers more money, and tell the good teachers they get the same thing no matter how good they are? Do you think the billions we are spending on education is well spent, and running like a well-oiled machine? I would say our military is better than our education system. We can argue about Iraq all day and night, but it is pointless, and will not sway either of us, so perhaps we should avoid that subject. I want good teachers to make more money, and I would like some of the wasted money to go to vouchers and let the free market work. Are you against vouchers, and if so, why?

Well you called education a money pit. I simply pointed out that we have much worse money pits in our government and they don't seem to care.

As for money to teachers. You aren't going to get good teachers with 35k a year. I'm sorry, but a smart man/woman who gets their masters degree and is skilled is simply not going to take that kind of money. If this means we start paying good teachers 100k, then so be it. I'd rather that money be put into keeping a skilled teacher on staff for my kids than making sure Exxon can pump some more oil this week.

What I would like to see is us stop dealing with these unions. They are the problem in the educational system. Teachers should not earn tenure, they should not be un-firable, and they should be held to the same standards that employees are in the private sector. Most teachers unions have so much power that you can't fire one no matter what they do. Kill the unions and you bring back a competitive marketplace.

As for vouchers, I'm all for it. Unfortunately, the President didn't have the balls to stick with his convictions on this one.

Yes there are many money pits in government, we can agree on that.

I beg to differ on the you can't get good teachers for $35k. My parents were both teachers. I know you were generalizing, but some people really want to be teachers, and the money is not their primary motivation. However, if they know they can make more money if they are more effective, you will see education improve.

I too wish Bush had pushed harder against the Democrats on the Voucher issue. I suppose one must choose their battles when you are leader of the free world and you have 8 years to get some stuff done.

It sounds like you and I agree for the most part on this issue.

There are a lot of good teachers in the world. There are a lot that do it because they like teaching. But I still think there is a large percentage of the population that is influenced much more by money. I think if teachers started getting paid comparable to what their background would make in the private sector, you'd see a lot more high quality, skilled teachers competing for positions.

Right now, many schools in the country are just taking what they can get. It would be great to see people competing for these jobs. Schools win, students win, teachers win, and out country wins.

As for Bush and the vouchers, he only has his party to blame. They've had full control of the government for 6 years now.

Do you believe private school teachers are better than public school teachers? I admit, if money is your motivator, and you go into teaching at a public school, then you probably went to public school. If you wanna make money, you do something that pays good money. Now I know that, and I went to public school.

I believe "full control" is a bit of a stretch. I'm no expert on government, but I think you need some democrats on your side to get things passed.

Do you think if democrats were in "full control" we would have even heard mention of vouchers? Nope. If you are in favor of vouchers, and you blame Bush for not passing it, how do you feel about the democrat's stand on vouchers?

It's hard to compare private schools to public schools as a whole. You have some private schools that are better because they charge high rates and can provide more. You also have public schools in rich communities that can wipe the floor with most private schools. In both cases though, the schools with the better teachers are typically the ones that have the most money coming into it. You don't see the schools on the southside of Chicago winning awards, you see the wealthy north shore schools doing that. If you compare the teachers, I guarantee you that the north shore schools are better more often than not. Not because of luck, but because the north shore schools pay $70-100k/year vs $35k/year.

You can even use this test when it comes to colleges. Schools like Harvard, Yale, etc are all private. They can pay more for professors and the cost is passed on to the students. Of course there are public schools that are better than some private schools, but in the end, the ones that pay their teachers the most usually are the ones that have the best teachers.

Well the Republicans do have control of the Senate, House, and White House. If they truly want to pass something, only a fillibuster is going to stop it. I'm not a Democrat by the way. I just don't feel you can blame a party that really doesn't have control. The Republican party worried more about fundraising than making this country better. They will be out of power in a month and only have themselves to blame for not doing anything while they had the power.

I don't like the Democrats stand on vouchers. The only reason they are against it is because they want the teachers unions on their side. The same goes for any Republican who is against it (mostly Republicans in close races this November).

Haha, yeah, one time I was traveling, I had like ALL this shit in the car (groceries, perishables to bring to the hotel for snacking, etc) and his fucking motorcade held me up for TWO HOURS, so it was all ruined. Was kind of funny -- they closed down the WHOLE FUCKING HIGHWAY.

I agree with most everything you said here. Just think, if vouchers were available, you would be able to choose which school you want. If one is better than another, that is the one that gets your business, just like in every other facet of our society. I believe in a family's right to choose. It is their (tax)money right?

Successful people tend to have successful children as a whole. An area filled with more successful people, you will see higher performance in that school. The successful people will be more involved with their child's learning and success as a whole. There are many factors that make a school perform better. Teacher pay is one of those. I don't think just paying everyone more for the same job really gets to the heart of the situation.

Well, if you're a loony lefty then you might believe that throwing money at something is guaranteed to improve it. However, if you've been paying attention you'll realize that it isn't.
