I explained this already a few times. How the sig hype on gfy got started:
I had a small contest out of boredom and i said the winner would get my sig for a month or whatever. Nobody was interested i think because back then being in someones sig isnt what it is today. Anyway, someone won, dont recall who.
He didnt claim his prize so i made a post asking that person what he wanted in my sig. Sleazydream read that post and thought i sold my sig. So he then made a thread about it and thats when it all started.

That was after the ARS dialer which skinned all the boards, and were paying wasn't it...
There were couple sigs sold here and there. But it really started when Lars and Lens started offering hte big bucks

Man sigs were sold waaayy before that. Seriously, that post by Sleazy got it rolling. He was like i wonder how much i can get for my sig and i guess someone paid a crazy amount for it.
Sig whoring in the end is all about companies attempting to get more advertising and more exposure for less money. If GFY charges, say, $1000 a month for a banner spot at the top (in rotation), and you can pay some bored semi-surfer $200 to come in and post 100 messages a day with your banner on it, you are likely getting the same level of coverage and exposure for way less money.
GFY has attempted to regulate this situation by only allowing board sponsors to run larger banners, but that hasn't stopped the sig-hos from finding ways to create small but effective messages to make them their money.
Lars was the one who started buying up lots of webmasters sigs as an advertising experiment which was successful for him at the time. Then it just continued, at the time it was webmasters selling their sigs but now we have a ridiculous amount of sigwhores.
All sigwhores should be banned, they are not webmasters and should not even be allowed to post here. They have got to be the worst form of advertising EVER, talk about seriously diluting the content of a webmaster board

Yupp, you are right but small time sigwhoring was invented by the above mentioned I would say. When did the whole Swoit-era take place, autumn 2002 or something?
I wouldnt mind if all sigs would be disabled...this wont happen though.
If GFY did want to clamp down on sig whores then all they would need to do is stop links in sigs from being clickable. This would mean that everyone could still have a URL in their sig but webmasters would actually have to copy and paste the URL into their browser to view the site.
That way you have the best of both worlds, you can still know what sites webmasters run and it makes sigwhoring more or less pointless because they'll only be able to drive a fraction of the traffic to the sponsor they are promoting in their sig
No idea who started it, but it rescued many boards from extinction and - for better or worse - made a board like GFY possible. Let's face it... probably fewer than 5% of the posts on this or any other board would appear if sigs were banned and/or people were not paid to post.
