didn't likewhoa give away free hosting back in the day in return for a sig spot? I'm not sure who started it but it's been around for a while.

No idea who started it, but it rescued many boards from extinction and - for better or worse - made a board like GFY possible. Let's face it... probably fewer than 5% of the posts on this or any other board would appear if sigs were banned and/or people were not paid to post.
