of course the end of the learning phase would be to actually visit the country you are tyring to learn its language but for setting the foundations of the language - what is best ? that is the question

Honestly? Go and live in the country of choice for a while. You will pick up the language quicker than any class or book.

yes, as I said, it's the fast track to learning the language but I think it should be done after you have some ground of the language - that way you learn it quicker when living in that country.

Try buying tutorial DVD's its a big help.. ive learn speaking french because of those DVD's ..

As mentioned above, immersion is the best way, but failing that, seeing it in use (I would not recommend a forum - slang and typing disease has affected almost everyone under the age of fourty) is one of the best ways to see how to 'read' it. As far as pronunciation, immersion is still the best.

I learnt english way before I started my english lessons in school from just watching subtitled american and british soap operas. That way you pick up the structure, the accent and build up vocabulary really quickly. Of course it might be a challenge for an english speaker to find something interesting to watch with english subtitles.

Now that my hubby is slowly starting to learn my 1st language, I found it useful to place post-it notes on things around the house like fridge, door, window, computer etc. saying their name in finnish, to teach him some of the basic words.
