Until you start looking for alternatives, you think you are stuck with Windows.
Also, WINE lets you run many Windows apps under Ubuntu... I had Photoshop 7 running smoothly in Ubuntu.
Fucking cool!
(Still use a PC though for primary work... and Mac OS X for graphic design)

Since you're a KDE fan, give PCBSD a look too. It is based on FreeBSD 6.X, has a stupid simple installation and a growing list of 1 click installation programs (PBIs).

You can usually find stories about your laptop model, and find out exactly what works and what doesnt, and how much of a pain in the ass its going to be. Laptops can be tricky sometimes, since hardware manufacturers like to make undocumented changes to hardware when they shrink it down to fit in the small form factor. The issue I had with Ubuntu is getting my wireless connection to work....didn't work at all and it looks like many people have the same issue. I got back to windows because of that, never had problems with it anyway.

Once you successfully port one program using WINE, the rest come pretty easy!
You just need to understand what WINE is and how it makes programs work.
I spent maybe 5 hours total to get all the programs I need working in Ubuntu
If you want a down and dirty way to get windows programs working under WINE, go to google or yahoo and search for "portable {program name}"
A great many common Win32 applications have been made to work on USB thumbdrives ... and this is the same basic functionality you need to get ANY Win32 program to run in Linux
