    Any sugar glider owners? [pics]

Just bought 3 of them last weekend, a mommy and her two babies...but im having some issues with them crabbing and biting. She bit me the first day we got her so I havent really tried to handle them again yet...

    Any suggestions on bonding/handling them?

The babies get hella crabby when I even lift up the towel over the cage to see them half the time lol...

Whats life expectancy on those? My daughter is wanting a hamster, but I know that would end shortly in sorrow.

Getting her a glider would be almost hell. They say you should "bond" with them for at least 2 hours a day, plus they're nocturnal (up all night long) Mine don't really get up till about 10:30-11 at night.. They also have a hella weird diet, im feeding ours the BML diet - http://www.sugargliderinfo.com/Nutri.../leadbeat.html

Be careful with the sugar gliders. When they grow up and are in the same cage they fight. My friend had two and let me save the gruesome details and say that they were in the same cage and only one was left when we got back. Not sure if its all of them or not, but it was pretty gross.

Never heard of this. Actually they like being together rather then alone. The only thing ive heard we might have problems with is when the babies mature enough they'll start fucking their mother...so we're going to have to get them neutered.

Ya was just reading a bit more about them. Id probably be better off with a ferret for her. I had one about 10 years ago. They are stinky though. She might just have to stick with our dog hehe.

ah damn, i didn't think anyone else owned gliders, that is awesome. i have had my male glider for about two years now.

when i first got him, he was part of a breeding pair, so he had never been handled. he crabbed alot and bit at my fingers all the time. everytime he nipped at my fingers i would just blow on him gently and say "No". After about a two weeks of handling him every night, he started getting the picture. Now he is so used to me that when i let him out to play in my office, when i stand up to leave, he comes running and hops right up my to my shoulder.

As for the crabbing, it will just them some time to get used to you. One good thing you can do for bonding is getting a bonding pouch. it's just a fleece pouch that hangs on your neck. you can leave it in their cage, and when they fall asleep in it, just take it out and wear it around for a little while at home. That way they get used to your smell, and the sound of your voice.

Ultimately though it just takes some time for them to get used to you and their new surroundings.

As a side note, make sure you wash your hands before handling them. They are very smell oriented, and if they smell something they like on your hands, it may also cause them to nip at you. it's not as important once they get used to you, but at first it will help a bit.

Oh, and make sure you keep your toilet seats closed. I have known two other people who have owned gliders, and unfortunately both have drowned when they have escaped their cage and fell into the toilet.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.

wow, I love sugar gliders! my fiance use to have 2, he got them years ago when they were pretty rare. he kind of rescued them from a pet store that was totally neglecting them. no one there even knew what they were, how old they were and they were never handled so they were very scared of people. like smack said, it just takes time. he use to get them out and let them crawl inside his shirt pocket and they would sleep in there while he watched tv, etc. let them get use to him, after a while they were pretty friendly and would jump around the room and jump back to him.

                                  good luck with them!

Yeah my girlfriend and I got ours from a guy in Jersey who had 5 or 6, the mom was part of a breeding pair. Im pretty sure he handled the mom, not positive though.

Ive deff heard of the blowing on them and telling them no, I'll have to try that. Still scares the hell out of me when they crab and when she bit me though, lol. First time owning them so its something I guess i'll have to get used to.

As for the bonding pouch, we do have one. Its not in the cage right now, ive got two other sleeping bags in the cage. So mabye ill throw the bonding pouch in the cage and see if I can get them in there tonight.

Never even thought about washing my hands but thats a damn good idea..Specially right now, ive got gun cleaner all over me lol. and as far as drowning, heard alot about this and exactly why they dont have 'water bowls'

I did some extensive researching before we got them, but I find talking to fellow glider owners alot more knowledgeable

I bought two about a decade ago, each was about three years old when I got em. One of them died last year, the other one actually got happier with that one dead (I always heard they are very social and will die without companionship). The one that is still alive has always been an asshole to me and never ‘bonded’, he always bites the shit out of me and does that cribbing noise at me every time I get close to his cage. The little bastard does start barking though just like a dog when he wants an apple, fucking hypocrite.

I did some extensive researching before we got them, but I find talking to fellow glider owners alot more knowledgeable
yeah, don't even bother reacting to the crabbing. if they know that it makes you back off they will just keep using it.
