"illegal operation"=how to get rid of it

On my old puter from time to time it keeps saying "This operation(or some such word) has done an illegal operation and will be shut down". Now, this usually happens when it is short on memory. I have deleted tons of files but it still show up, or the screen freezes until I reboot. Any ideas of how to stop this? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

format C:

then reinstall everything, if it still does it.. use linux instead!

No really, that's as good as it gets. I completely recommend backing up all essential files, formatting C, and reinstalling your operating system and your software.

That will fix the problem.

go to Start then Run
type in msconfig
go to start up
and start turning stuff off..... until you
find it.... if you don't find it by doing this...
try looking at system.ini & other .ini's with edit.com
and if you can not still find it... the problem
most likly is in the Registry.... and your fucked...

Unfortunately, this is probably the best solution.Trying to track down the problem to one particular cause will be very time consumming, and you'll likely end up reinstalling anyways.
I've had the same problem myself, and all I can say is save your self a mental break down, bite the bullet and do it.

funkmaster is correct.... if you format c: and it's a memory
problem..... guess what you have after format c:

Or try switching the ram around..... also you might try
taking Ram out one at a time....

I assume you have ran scan disk.... if not run it...

it's time consuming no matter what you do... or you could
get lucky by doing format c:

if you do format c: make sure you have a Boot disk
( NOT A START UP DISK, they are diff ) with your
CD driver...

sometimes I have reinstalled Windows from dos and fixed
problems..... to do this you will have to un-commit out
in your autoexec.bat file the REM for you CD driver as
for some reason windows commit's it out...
to do this use edit.com

What program are you running when it gives you this error?

My old computer gave me the same error sometimes when I was running IE. I just downloaded and re-installed IE, and never had the problem again.

If it isn't a problem with windows itself, try re-installing the program which crashes out. It's worth a shot before you delete everything. It might just be a corrupt installation of a program which causes it.
