I find it funny that people not only inflate the amount of sales they make, but also the amount of time they spend working, as if it reflects their wealth. You hear all the time about these genius CEOs who wake up and get to work at 4am and work hard all day, and everyone thinks they're great. Why!?

I like to think that if you're making a shitload of money, you ought to work less. We're working for a high quality of life, right? Don't get me wrong, the work can be pretty fun, and making more money is generally good, but if you're doing extremely well and you still want to put in 14 hour days, I think that's a problem. They say time is money, but it works both ways. Don't people have hobbies? Aren't people working to earn money to free up time for something else? Maybe it's just me, but the ultimate goal of just building wealth and maybe enjoying it with the scrap of time you have left seems crazy, and for those who have that ultimate goal, I hope that on your deathbeds you don't feel like you spent too much of your youth busting your ass once you were already successful. Personally, I respect someone who works really hard to be successful, but I lose that respect if they keep working hard once they've achieved that success. Relax!

Rich people aren't supposed to be working. Not much, at least. We're at a weird point in history where the amount in your bank account is the measure of your personal worth, and you are further respected for keeping at working even when you don't have to. Did the richest of history do the same thing? My job is great and so is this industry, but there is more to life, no?

Ok, but I think part of the point is if you stop working you won't necessarily have less than you do now. You may have less than a potential, future you who kept on pulling 14 hour days, but there is a way of making X amount and staying there.

How much is your X amount? How much money do you have to make before you pat yourself on the back and say, "Job well done, me. Time to relax on the beach for years of retirement."

Does anyone have specific numbers? Or is really a case of however many millions you end up making, you love the act of working simply for the sake of working and will carry on regardless of how much there is in the bank?

I will admit that I find it pretty funny when so many people claim to work 14 hours a day and still act as if they're broke. I have absolutely no idea what I would do to fill those 14 hours of work.

I'm not rich, I'm not broke, and I definitely don't work 14 hours a day. Right now I'm "comfortable", getting back into work mode though.

I think someone that works hard is well respected and this is why people inflate how much they work.

I for instance work 60-80 hours per week. I could work 20 hours if I wanted to. But I take pride in what we do and my businesses are my favorite hobby. I like that my work is my hobby at the same time because it means that I really enjoy what I do. However, its the gift and the curse because being obsessed with "business" takes away from other parts of your life that perhaps should be a high priority.

Working to make money to work less is poor man's logic. It takes working as a necessity, and little more than a means to an end.

A rich workaholic is like a World of Warcraft addict. He works to make money to do more and other work, etc. The work itself is the goal, and money is just a measure of success.

don't work that way . . . most sucessful guys start something else after they get one thing going . . we 'like' working . . we 'don't like' siting around watching TV . . if you can't undestand that you'll not have much success -bmb

I have a friend who retired in his early 30's and has lived in the South of France ever since. I could no more do that than fly to the moon.

I hated my first and only job working for someone else, principally because there was nothing to get my teeth into. For the 35 years since I have been a workaholic because with the exception of this business, I have never done worked at anything I didn't enjoy.

You cannot compare CEO's with people who work for themselves, because they have to conform with their employers' cultures. Many demand long hours. I don't have a problem with someone who sees work only as a means to an end, but by the same token I'm not going to apologize for enjoying the challenges of the marketplace more than going to see a movie or whatever.

It need have absolutely nothing to do with money. I have let businesses go at firesale prices, just so I could get into something new. I have wasted and given away more than I want to think about. It was just the sheer fun of taking on something new and making it happen.

I've stopped checking stats and boards and shit before I start work... Never realised how much of my day doing that stuff wasted...

Now I'm adding more to my routine, so hope to see more dollars flowing in.

when i started out, I worked 14-18 hours a day with the websites. Now my offline work takes 2-3 hours a day on average, and the websites maybe 1-2 hours. The rest of the time I Work with my offroaders, Play World of warcraft, come up with new ideas or just surf the net. You dont have to work hard to make money when the business is running well.

If you still have ("have" is different from "want") to work 14 hours a day after 5-8 years, you are either bad at what you do, doing something wrong or the business is just not profitable. In either case - stp what you are doing and reinvent yourself

I'm pretty lazy, and that helps me find the easiest and most productive way of doing things. Less work = better.
