But max file upload sizes to ~25mb..
any ideas?
What are my best hosting options?

it's all depends.. but if you talking a lot of bw, you can get very good price for traffic, but even so you going end up with big bill if a lot of people know that site..

Here's my Camfrog server http://stats.reliablehosting.com/?server=wn44
at any given time there's 1000-1600 viewers on it streaming video (max 160 Mb/s) . I can't imagine what youtube is... but I'd love to host them.

YouTube, which is streaming 40 million videos and 200 terabytes of data per day, may be paying between a tenth of a cent and half a cent per minute.

lets say YouTube being as big as they are are direct buyers of bandwidth (not bought through a hosting company) so you figure they get good bandwidth like Level3 for around the $18/mbit and Cogent for around $7/mbit.

you figure that they are probably around the 10-20 gigs per second thats 10,000 - 20,000 mbit. your looking at big number

It would cost so much that it would be much better/cheaper to buy your own server(s). Then you don't have to worry about thos excessive BW charges. I can't imagine that a site as large/popular as youtube does anything other than this.

how much would a server go for to be able to serve 100k videos a day? (~1mb each)

Maybe I'm tired and still trying to wake up or something, but that article makes absolutely zero sense. First it says "Meanwhile (YouTube's) bandwidth costs, which increase every time a visitor clicks on a video, may be approaching $1 million a month--much of which goes to provider Limelight Networks., then a little later in the article they say "Industry observers estimate that YouTube, which is streaming 40 million videos and 200 terabytes of data per day, may be paying between a tenth of a cent and half a cent per minute" (which comes out to around $2,628/yr). WTF? Could those 2 figures be any further apart?

pretty sure the per minute rate is in reference to per minute of video downloaded

The paragraph talks about sites typically paying one cent per minute of video streamed. They estimate that YouTube pays .1 - .5 cents per minute of video streamed.

Fuck you are an annoying attention whore, arent you ?
How many times did you ask that in this thread.

Do you have some kind of a mental condition or something, like obssessive compulsive disorder or something ?

Whatever the cost of yourfilehost's bw is, I am pretty sure its way lower then the cost of medication that would be required to sort your condition.

notice how the question wasnt answered. on gfy people often miss the replies in a thread because theyre so filled with bullshit posts by idiot sigwhores, so I need to repost it.

speaking of medication and mental defects, please look up 'Borderline Personality Disorder' (... and thanks for the bump)

There are roughly 525,949 minutes in a year, so at a half cent a minute their bandwidth costs for the video streaming would run $262,974.50, or about $21,914.15 per month. At a tenth of a cent, it's $52,594.90 per year or $4,382.90 per month.

But is that a per-minute total, or a per-minute-per-terabyte? (I know, it seems an odd measure, but when $$$ is at stake people come up with odd ways of metering charges) Figuring it at per terabyte and it jumps to $1,753,163.33 per month. Allowing for off-peak times decreasing the total bill, say by a little under half, and you come back down to the industry observers guess of a cool million bucks a month.

There are probably more youtube sites out there in the works, and indeed we have a company we are doing a proposal now. In their outline they look for the hosting company to partner up with them.

If anyone is discouraged about the amount of bandwidth, don't be. Mass traffic (non adult) always means CASH. Develop the site, then worry about the bandwidth later.

how big a pipe would you need if you were getting a dedicated server, hosting ~100k 2mb files a day?
