Interesting. There was another thread earlier this week citing a billionaire who argued it would be dumb to buy a site like YouTube.

I think that was Mark Cuban... owner of Dallas Mavericks, sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo..

Google just signed an advert deal with news corp for almost 1 billion.

They want to avoid the possability of doing this with youtube by buying them out.

At least that is one of many reasons....

That's nuts. 1.6 billion dollars can buy a lot of advertising, promote a lot of stuff, launch a lot of new programs. It's 1.6 billion! Is youtube really worth that much? There is much more money to be made elsewhere, surely.

Yep and if youtube can add video ads or text ads on the site google will be competing with yahoo, MSN, and Ask.com for the exclusive deal. They may end up paying more for a 5 year term than the actual straight out purchase price.

Obvioulsy the actual application that youtube built is not that hard to duplicate but they are buying the eyeballs and audience that comes with it.

Google thinks ahead... youtube just got itself established as the first internet video sharing site. It's getting more viewers than CNN, FOX and all the major tv networks. In a few years this is going to be tv, whatever you want to watch on demand. Good for those GOOG holders...

that's true, but it's still real early and for free on their google search page or for a small amount like 100 million they can brand google video with a hot easy to remmember name and beat youtube in 2-3 months. just a few ad spots and they win. add to that they already have more infrastructure in place and could just make a few quick deals with nbc or someone and start broadcasting full tv shows with ads on demand in a week if they wanted to.

Yeah man, good point. But I guess they rather buy their competition instead of trying to beat them. Youtube is waaay too popular nowadays, even here in brazil where less than 10% of the pop. speaks english, it's an worldwide fever.

Google is getting this site for a good price IMHO. Youtube is one of the busiest sites on the net and only getting bigger...

The issue about legality of content is something google is going to have to clean up... However I think google has the reserves to weather the storm even if they do get sued or have a class action lawsuit.

Regardless the legal threats will only make youtube more popular and draw more people in to take a look.

Just my 2 cents but I think it's a very smart purchase... Just think how much money they could make off adwords alone if they put it on there LOL!

DH

I guess Warren Buffett should take your advice too. Quit buying up all those businesses and just brand your own!

Yea but think about how much Google gets sued already by content providers the world over, by governments, by the little guys.... Everybody seems to love to sue google. Youtube lawsuits would be a few more drops in the bucket.
