will internet domains be useless one day?

a few months ago, i heard about a guy who was developing a system that went away from typing in url's...it was a totally different system then what we have now. He was stating that it would be alot simpler system then now, and would make it much easier to find websites then the current system of typing in the URL.

do you think such a thing will ever happen? Will ICANN allow it, since they would basically become useless and lose billions?

As technology improves, I think this issue will start coming up more and more, and I don't believe it is too far fethched to say that in 20 years from now, the internet may look totally different then it is currently

If something like that happens, there would have to be a fair way to convert the millions of internet companies to the new methond. Thats almost like saying the goverment is going to issue new money and say the old is worthless

True, i mean, the "new" equivalent of sex.com can't just be sold to someone else. That's just taking someone's source of income and handing it over to someone else.

So yes, maybe sometime down the road, they'll develop a better system, but they will definetley have to give existing domain name owners the first oppurtunity to purchase the newer versions of their domains.

Until they plug that neural logger into our brains to pool our collective thoughts and track what we want... Domains will stay. The only other way to assign an "address" to a company is via numbers which takes away the branding & identity of a company. I prefer to have a domain name or at least a AOL keyword that represents my company's name effectively.

With that said, unless that guy found some funding for Real Names, he's just talkin out his ass.

the company was called realnames.
http://www.realnames.com
they were funded by microsoft, integrated into ie, and then magically microsoft decides not to renew the contract and instead broken address requests to it's msn search portal. quite interesting indeed. so realnames is now defunct.

but eventually as technology changes there will be no more .com or .net or whatever. the interconnections will be more intuitive. as you're more familiar with other things you'll use simpler abbreviations. like gfy. if i type gfy it in my browser it should know that i visit this site and those two (gfy and gofuckyourself.com) are related thus take me there. i suppose a lot of work has to take place in the browser/os/gui for this to happen. maybe even some ai stuff developed.

Actually, that doesn't sound like it would work, since the system needs to accommodate more and more names all the time, but "gfy" could just as easily stand for Ginny F. Yanks as for Go Fuck Yourself.

Yes and No

It's like real estate, some prices stay the same, others go up, but there is enough for everybody

What you're reading is BULLSHIT...

So many people have tried to come up w/ their own domain system -- but in the end you need a bullshit plugin to make any of that stuff work... That crap will never catch on.

.COM will be king for MANY MANY MANY years...

EDMO: and others JIVE HERE, I'm afraid your partly right in my opinion only.. Microsoft will change there browser and others will follow in the near future..they'll be controlling the typein traffic..
and the owners will have a chance to pay for there keywords they own (domains) sorta like a pay per click idea? I think it will eventually go this route? sad really.. realnames was trying to go that way but fucked up! there won't be abb's like (gfy) i don't think so.he.he. on a closing note; all the engines a purging pretty
quick to dump all the free lisitings to make way for the paid ones..
TGP's are a dead end too.. swapping shit hits for crap.. etc.etc.
good day.. gone Jiven.

I hate to point out the obvious, but I am sure that the inventors of the pony express and the telegraph must have asked that same question.

what i'm saying is that eventually there will be some sort of system that will recogonize that when i type gfy i'm actually wanting to see gofuckyourself.com. google has already done a lot of work in this area with their page rankings.. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...&oe=UTF8&q=gfy
microsoft is also cutting a course in this direction with .net and integrated search technology. searches could be greatly enhanced if the browser would integrate history files/cookies. and if these history/cookies are distributed amongst multiple machines you'd have a way to rank popularity, thus relevance and make better search decisions. i'd say that you'd be able to actually take on google if you could create a toolbar search that would use distributed user histories and page popularity in a way that made search more effective. if you frequent adult sites and type in gfy, gofuckyourself.com should come up directly. of course there's a lot of work to be done in the algorithm development but it could and probably will be done at some point.

by no means does this mean that .coms will disppear overnight. i'm just saying that as the technology gets more intelligent and user friendly, the actual goo behind it will become more hidden.

I would think that by the time our sun turns into a red giant, domain names will have become a thing of the past. Anyone want to argue that point? Of course, SOMEDAY domain names will be useless.
