A good reason to leave porn...

Lately, mainstream has been a lot more profitable. For me, anyway. A few years ago, the two were pretty much equally easy to make money in, but these days, getting bookmarkers, hits, leads, sales, clicks... everything seems to be easier in mainstream.

Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Sir, so what are these mainstream themes you talk about?

The surfers are also finding Jesus so many of them have stopped surfing for porn. That's why mainstream is so much easier these days.

Personally, I think that what they're finding is not Jesus, but heaps upon heaps of free porn, as well as lousy, generic, rip-off paysites.

Besides, the average person only spends a very small percentage of his earnings on porn, but on the internet, a very large percentage of sites are adult.

In mainstream, some things I promote earn me $10+ per click, the top one is $20+ per click... try and find something like that in adult

Well I wouldn't give up porn for real estate right now. That's for damn sure.
Porn can teach you very agressive marketing skills which you can diversify and apply to mainstream site ideas (from t-shirts, to ebay, blogs, stores, etc) at any time. But if you mean that mainstream sales payout rates are higher than adult you're nuts, when it comes to making more online as a 'webmaster'.

Fulltime salaries at adult companies and mainstream companies at about the same size are pretty similarly sized firms. It's more of a choice of speciality question than in/out of porn question. To a server admin for an adult firm vs. a mainstream firm, he may careless or even be more challenged in adult - but also have more fun

Microniches. Some in popular markets, some in less popular markets. Basically, I look for underdeveloped markets, and try to develop sites catering to them.

What I mean is that it is way easier in mainstream to make a lot by finding the right niche. In mainstream, there are still quite a few niches worth billions that only have a fraction of the sites developed for them that adult has, with many of the existing sites being either amateur or amateurish.

I've worked for an adult company for the past six years. The company's publicly traded, with a board of directors and all that shit. The work used to do was primarily web-based but now I've been put on developing wireless stuff using a platform our company bought. It's a job. It's a job that has paid well over the years and that I appreciate, even if I was intentionally ddisseminating pornography.

I have a side website in my sig that promotes sponsor content. I touch it about once a year when I get sick of it and want to change the design and flow of it. Only make a few grand a year off it. Out of the couple of hundred who visit it a day, after I remove the spam bots from the stats, my ratio's pretty good among other sponsors and shitty among others. That's before I compare my stat tracking from sponsor stat tracking.

I think I'm only "in" this business because I develop for an adult entertainment company. Happily, I can justify my occupation to myself because I have a chance to learn and build cool shit and the company I work for has "some" standards. Sadly, I'm in a profession filled with a bunch of scum willing to fuck over others for a quick buck.

I guess I'm trying to say, I'd leave porn and never look back if the opportunity arose: And I say that as a developer and as a surfer, after seeing how the industry works.

I do have many mainstream domains, but few I've had the time to develop. I really must put more work in them because indeed, they seem to have a good work to cash ratio...

That's true in porn and entertainment, but some things (ie physical things) you just can't get for free.

The money has always been in mainstream. It's just that you've got to have something to offer. Whereas a porn affiliate can just jerk traffic around and make money.

As a webmaster, what you want to offer is expertise*.

*"Expertise", in this case, means having done a few Google searches on a subject, and having written a few pages about it, maybe with a few useful links thrown in.

Na, you don't need something to offer, you don't even need a website. Buy clicks with adwords and try to make more than you spend by sending these clicks to mainstream affiliate programs.

+ Good $$$ without much work, once you play this game a few months it runs pretty much on autopilot
- Alot of really boring upfront research, lower profit margin on the money invested than in adult

Well, that's my experience and I like the fact that I don't depend on adult to make money in case things like .xxx are revived...

yeah definately. in started doing some adwords stuff for a certain something that was already fairly competitive and was blown away at conversions and the volume of traffic available. not to mention the fact that the volume of traffic available through content ads (where porn can't be advertised anyway) is insane and cheap.
