Had a leopard gecko for a few years. Easy to care for and the one I had was pretty chill to pick up and hand to friends - not sketchy (like squirrel sketchy), but relaxed and mellow. Even shat in one spot in the cage which made for easy cleanup.

Or fish. I've found, though, picking up fish and having them drop in the disposal doesn't bode so well for the fish.

Bearded Dragons are pretty cool. They're easy to handle and friendly. I had several of them from 6" to about 26" (with the tail).

I'd go for a ferret or a plant.

Did you know that ferrets can pass UNDER a door? I saw a vid you YouTube a while ago and I couldn't believe my eyes.

Get a turtle.

Easy to care for
Won't bark and piss off the neighbors
Don't have to take outside to take a dump in the rain
Doesn't come with an "ewwww" factor for most girls

Think twice before you get a bird. although they can be trained to shit only on thier cage, you have to work real hard to make sure that they keep doing it.

They also love the soft rubber under the keys on your keyboard. and any electrical cable is someting interesting for them to chew on.
