laptops - mobile office - overheating
I'm looking into making my office 100% mobile. At present I use 4 pcs but could manage on 3 at a push. I'm going to be travelling in some developing nations, looking into property and franchises. I'd like to be able to take my office with me and have it operate at the same level. Am also going to be having lessons from one of our posters here and I dont want my travelling to interfere.
A couple of my desktop pcs operate 24/7. I turn them off for about 20 mins a day. So my question is can you do this with laptops? I've owned a couple of laptops in the past and they used to overheat very quickly. Would it be possible to leave then on over night? Another question is about the kind of laptop I should look into. I'm not a billionaire (not poor either) and don't want to spend the earth. I figure if I buy 3 laptops at once I'll be able to be negotiate a good discount. Would something like this do the trick? acer are pretty poor machines, i've seen them not lasting long myself. You can pickup on ebay some decent machines from ibm, dell, sony, asus for very good prices.
I mainly use a vaio and i never turned off, sometimes it's a bit hot, but nothing to worry about. |

Thanks dude. This part is especially good news. I'll go check out ebay now. I like vaios (never owned one but sony is always good), just wish the lower priced ones had 2048 ram. |

Most important here is:
Brand - Buy something good. I love IBMs, but others like F-Siemens, Sony and Toshiba also do good stuff. CPU - Get a box with a cpu that requires less energy. AMDs usually get alot more hot than a equivilant Intel cpu. No laptops are harmed by being turned on 24/7 - I have many and I never shut them down. Heat often isnt any problem either, but working in direct sunlight isnt recommended... ![]() |

I'm glad I started this thread. I probably would have chosen the wrong brand. Thanks for the advice folks.

You can also add a "laptop cooler" which is a slip under fan that you can put under the laptop to help with cooling when you have a plug in for power. This is another good way to keep things cool in the long run.
My personal experience is that ultra-thin laptops have more issues with cooling, saving half a pound or whatever off the size of the laptop just seems to add issues. |

I "think" I'm going to go for 3 of these http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/336637.html
Either that or I'll buy two and treat myself to something more flashy as my main unit. Thanks for all the advice folks! |
