When will the USA...

When will the USA go metric?

Will it ever happen? How can you cope with things like 5/8" 7/16th.

Just curious.

More info here:

Quote:
One goal of the metric system is to have a single unit for any physical quantity. All lengths and distances, for example, are measured in metres, or thousandths of a metre (millimetres), or thousands of metres (kilometres), and so on. There is no profusion of different units with different conversion factors, such as inches, feet, yards, fathoms, rods, chains, furlongs, miles, nautical miles, leagues, etc. Multiples and submultiples are related to the fundamental unit by factors of powers of ten, so that one can convert by simply moving the decimal place: 1.234 metres is 1234 millimetres, 0.001234 kilometres, etc. The use of fractions, such as 2/5 of a metre, is not prohibited, but uncommon.

They tried to do that back in the 70s, it never took. They gave up.

The only thing 13mm is good for is a stripped fucking head.

we know what the metric system is, we just don't want to use it because we would have to get new wrench and socket sets

You think the UK isn't metric? Funny, I seem to recall my Triumph took metric tools to work on.

Do you guys build stuff like cars with non-metric bolts?

I think the Auto Industry might have cottoned on to metric.

Yes / No?

Lol.

We still use the term "miles" but only when approximating things or saying things like "he was going 100 miles an hour"

So you could still say mile and foot in that case.

My fucking Daewoo has metric and standard hardware... just depends on the component.

Any backyard mechanic knows to have both sets in their toolbox.

I wish the US wuld go metric, so much easier to work with, especially when it comes to measuring fluids.

Seems the UK is in a transition stage..

Quote:
Most of British industry and government, including major companies, the NHS, the armed forces, the police and local authorities, use the metric system in their internal operations and in some of their public or official communications.
Quote:
In everyday conversation, many British people freely use feet, stones, acres and miles per gallon, while even people who use metric units in their work (e.g. as designers, maths teachers or engineers) feel faintly uncomfortable or embarrassed at using metres, kilograms or hectares outside the workplace. Much of the non-specialist media gives primarily imperial units (rarely with metric equivalents).

Interesting stuff.

I remember my teacher in 7th grade insisting it would happen any day. Still, I am glad I paid attention because I live in a partially metric society now.

The UK is indeed in transition. There are things that have been metric for a long time and people just took it for granted. Then a few years ago things changed and now you get your food in kilos instead of pounds at the supermarket. They have to sell it that way but it is confusing to a lot of people that have shopped in pounds (weight not currency) for their whole lives. For me it is easy once I got it into my head.

Road distances are still done in miles though.
