The American Ban On Online Gambling :
Not been on much the last few days, can anyone point me in the direction of the main threads on this ? Search isn't working for me.
More "you're not allowed" stuff from the 'Land Of The Free' ? I hope this doesn't hit the UK anytime soon... |

I just love how consenting adults can't gamble online, but they are free to go gamble at a retail establishment. How are the political scumbags going to spin it?

There are currently billions of dollars in development of casinos underway. The govt slanted the laws on this a couple of years ago in favour of more gaming operations. Others active on net operations will prob say more, but the UK (Docklands) is good for gaming hosting, tho the actual financial side may prob be better off in other jurisdictions to help alleviate UK taxation. Hard to say exactly how this will play out yet - irrespective of US legislation. There is a WTO final decision due in about 30 days where the WTO has already issued judgement against the US for interrupting financial transactions involving gaming. There are around three US domestic laws which violate WTO treaties, one being the Wire Act - and presumably the current proposed law simply up's the "anti". This judgement was sometime last year and the US has still not complied - so, in theory, the next step is sanctions. The "instigators" of this action are Canada, Antigua, the UK and a couple of other countries and who knows, but smell a head-on clash over trading treaties next. PS Hell knows.. but can see David Carruthers (BetOnSports) legal team introducing the fact that the laws under which David has been charged are actually illegal under international trading treaties.

The new law bans banks and credit card companies from transferring funds for online gambling sites.
It also gives the government the power to order ISP's to block access to web sites offering gambling. All the major gaming companies are going to be hammered hard since 85% of their action comes from US based customers. Most all have said they'll abide by the new law.
