Back In The Day....
Wow that brings back memories for sure...
...Back in the early 80's I had a TRS-80 Model 1. I bought my first 300 Baud Model to log-in to the school's HP 3000 mainframe, but once I found BBS's I was hooked. I soon wanted one of my own but didn't have the money to buy one so I wrote one myself, called DATAMATE. It supported only 1 user at a time, spitting out data at 300 baud. "Graphics" were not even ansi at the time. They were made of of ###, ***, --- and similar characters. This was COOL because you really had to be creative to make graphics under such crazy limits. The computer did not even have LOWER CASE characters! (At least not until I made mod for it). The idea was to make it an adult bbs where singles could post sexually explicit messages and look for mates. My mom wonder what the fuck was up with her 16 year old? Nevermind that 99.9999% of the users back then were all nerdy males. There still that .0001% of them that were actually female. (More on that later). It became a success and I used the money I made from it to buy a new TRS-80 Model 3. I got a second phone line and now 2 people could use the system at the same time. Wait. How did 2 TRS-80's network with each other back then? Through the Cassette port! That's right! I made a simple program in machine language to have the 2 machines talk to each other through the casette ports. Not only did both computers share the same database of messages, but it allowed for the user on the Model 3 to chat live with the other user on the Model 1. The BBS ran for a little more than 4 years... THOSE WERE THE DAYS. Tinkering, learning, hacking, exploring. These days there's never enough time to do that kind of cool stuff. I still have those computers. They still work but the drives are shot and the cassette player for the model 1 (which used to store and load programs and data) has crusted over and seized. I turn them on once in a while and play with BASIC now and then. FUN. Oh, and that .0001% female? Her name was Angie, and she introduced me the love of my life. Happy Anniversary, Tracy! The first modem I got, I "borrowed" from Ericsson. That had to be back in '88. Used it on my good old Commodore 128

I've got a similar story to the ones posted here. Started small, grew quick.
The real trick came when the WWW started to take over. Turning the opperation into a full on dial-up ISP was a rocky road that turned out well. |

Started with a C64, wrote some silly games in Simon's Basic (a line chases a dot, lol), skiped 2 & 386 and got myself an asskicking monster computer, a 486 with 8mb ram and an 850mb hdd, with a 14.400 modem hehe, soon followed by a soundblaster pro compatible soundcard and a 2x cd drive
Ray if you want the cookbook I've got it (you can find everything on DC++ p2p)

wow, now that is bringing back the past... my dad got me the ZX81 when i was 15 which had 4k memory and then got the t1000 (with that 16k add-on) then the tx1500 with the rubber keys. with the tx printer, i wrote a word processing program that did line wrapping and saved on cassette. Fight the dating of yourself!
