:stop A GIFT: To all the GFY old timers [PIC & FILE]

OK, I found this in the basement and luckily I had an old computer with a floppy drive on it...that's right! a floppy!

http://thevegabros.com/pcboard15.zip

It's a DOS copy of PCBoard 15.0/2 !!! With ANSI capability!
(Don't worry, not a virus or anything)

Now, for you youngsters, before we had HTML, and the INTERNET, people got their porn by dialing into a computer with a modem, and that computer was probably running PC Board. it's a dos based bulletin board system.

I'll most likely play with it, but if anyone installs it, throw up some screen captures so we can remember the old days when it took five minutes to download a single pic.

Anyone else run a board back then (1992-4)?

Out of This World was the one i was on all the time, god those were the days. Had to dial into a board and then hop across to another to get to the Web. God in so glad broadband is here, 5-10 minutes to download a single porn pic over a 28.8k modem was hell

In fact i'm shocked that it works so well. This has been in a box of stuff since I owned it in 1992.

Now why on earth would you say you got a virus...what a shithead move. Maybe I'm over reacting, maybe you were joking...but accusing someone of giving people a virus is fucked up. I'd really like an explaination.

Check it out it's cool:

for those of you who know me...You know there's no fucking virus, it's the original version and it works, just a fun toy for those of us that were out of diapers when the internet was just starting. It runs in a dos window just like it did on my 486-66DX

My first "site" if you want to call it that. yep we had porn. porn by the CD full. Anarchist's cookbook too (wish i could find that) my company was called Lightspeed Technologies (not to be confused with the lightspeed of today, lightspeed girls etc.) But I remember members had to send us a physical check or money order...there was no CCbill in those days, lol.

I found out I couldn't run a BBS and play games at the same time on a 386... I gave up the BBS thing after about a week.

The craze was winding down by then anyway. The www was taking over.

You read my mind...when the 14400 came out it was like "the future is now!" in comparison remember? Not to mention 28.8. By the time 56 came out we were already off of gopher and onto www with html.

i swear i remember buying the fastest computer they make and the sales guy saying "wow i wish i had one of these"...it was a 486-66DX

It is where I got my start, with BBS's. Ran almost every type of software there was to try. Searchlight, Wildcat, Pcboard, WWIV, MajorBBS to name a few. Was on icenet, fidonet, and about eight or so more.

Had all the key door games with constant tournaments. Tradewars standard version, tradewards modded out, Land of devastation, some whore game, Lord or whatever it was called, and a few other games that were on fidonet and such, damn my memory is fuzzy.

The tourneys brought in ok money. Real money came from the files areas and access to special number modems. I went to a credit based system, you upload x and receive y number of credits. Long story short, added some naughty pictures and people asked if they could buy credits. Light bulb went off, got the balls to ask a friend to pose naked, paid out the ass to get scans done. Money was easier to make than catching rain in a swimming pool during a typhoon.

Had about every adult CD available on multi disk changers, but the real money hit when I went exclusive even though they were not models so to speak, people wanted them over the playboy scans and whatnot that you could buy.

At the highlight I had more phone lines than four blocks of houses combined. Nothing is more humorous to me than remembering the full sized tall towers of nothing but modems.

Well I miss the envelopes every day with cash, and money orders. No charge backs ever, and never a single complaint about content or even busy signals.

Not to mention it was all about the text links. Very limited in space yet oh so powerful. Put the right text next to the right file and it was like printing money. Then for the ever so special ones something as simple as "you do not want to see this" was pure gold.

bingo! Although I think the 600's were out, but way too expensive for my burger flippin' money. I think minimum wage was like $3.25 or something.

I ran Renegade BBS software on my IBM, with a 2400 baud modem.

Before that, I ran VBBS on the Commodore 64 with a 300 baud modem.

Hot shit!

Before THAT (but not on a board), I had a 50 baud acoustic modem (the kind you put the phone on top of to make it connect) and the Commodore 64.

You weren't old school if you were using 3.5 floppies either. ;-) 5.25 is where the action is at! I had four 5.25 floppy drives on my Commodore, before getting a 20MB (yeah, MB!) drive for like $1,000.

Yup, Tradewars was the shit. I used to make planets and shit with TWEDIT. LoD was pretty sweet, I used to enjoy playing that against my users. The whore game -- was that the one where you tried to bang all these chicks, and you could get STD's and shit? And like penis enlargements and all that?

Fuck yeah -- Fidonet! Fuck, I remember hacking that shit into the board and pulling the newsgroups for my users ... damn.

Old school for sure.

Fuck that, I had an old Amiga that didn't have ANY save/load capabilities. You had to WRITE THE PROGRAM every time you TURNED IT ON!

If you understand the frustration of getting a 9600 baud modem, and finding out it only connects at 9600 or a little less to the same damn brand of modem and 2400 to everyone else you understand this thread.
