Where to buy PC for editing?

Hi all.

I'm looking to get a high-performance PC for video editing. Here are the specs I would like for it to have, but I'm not sure where would be the best place to shop for one. Any suggestions you have for where to look, as well as any modifications I should make to my computer, are appreciated.

Minimum 2GB RAM
Approx 1TB Hard drive space
High performance processor, perhaps a Core 2 Duo, unless you can recommend something better.

What vendors and businesses sell machines that would meet these requirements? I've tried looking through Dell but have been disappointed so far.

If you can hold off a bit, I’d wait for the quad-cored Intel chips due out later this year. They will be by far the best content creation chip available. If you can’t wait but don’t want to break the bank, the Intel E6600 is probably your best bet, it constantly ties and occasionally defeats the AMD FX-62 in CC (E6600 = $320.00, FX-62 = $679.50).

If you want to build it yourself you can get just about everything you need for sub $1500.00 by shopping around at pricewatch.com or pricegrabber.com.

I personally would buy each part seperately and build it myself.. Of course, if you never built a PC before you may want to buy a pre-built one or get some you know that knows how to do it for you.

I built out this Dell just now. I didn't add additional drives because I'd rather have the extra port and use an external drive and I also included a new 24" monitor

I just ordered a machine for videos (paid a ton, since I can't buy outside EU without customs). A bit over 2k euros for
two 5130 dualcore xeons, 2 gigs of fully buffered eec 667mhz ram, SATA HD, an ASUS DSBV-D motherboard, dvd drive, graphics card and so forth.

I hate Finland, everything's so fucking pricey... I wish I could use newegg or ncix or something like that

..and I'm off.

I'm not good at building computers myself. Would prefer a whole machine that comes with a warranty in case something breaks. Suggestions?

Alienware/Boxx seems a bit high-end for me. The rest of the suggestions are great so far though. Keep them coming!

Very True. Dell has made alienware a less desirable computer. They used to be amazing for video. You can order an alienware in Circuit City now. What is the PC world comign to. Build it yourself or get garbage I guess.

I also would suggest going with a mac unless you are very picky about which editing programs you use. MacPro's are fucking amazing computers.

Yes, this has to be a PC to be compatible with my other partners.

To summarize:

Looking for a PC to edit video. Must have at least 2GB or RAM, 1TB of HD space, and Core 2 Duo or better. Must be able to order said machine complete from a company, and with a warranty.

Thank you all so far, this is really helping me narrow it down!

youd have to build it pretty much.

you should seperate the storage drives from the drives that you will be capturing to and ripping to. you can get 10k rpm drives for that, set it up raid 0 and for the rest of the drives set it raid 5. thats what i do.

I would prefer one, but one of the companies I work for uses only PCs, and therefore I need one which is compatible and runs the same software as the other machines.

Again, I cannot build one myself, I need to order one from a company that can guarantee a warranty on the machine, meets the specifications I listed earlier, and comes in at sub $3,500.

Most of the Dell product lines can be customized, and if you live in the U.S. their support is excellent.

If you live in Canada, forget it.

alienware is a fucking rip off, exact same parts you would get anywhere else for twice the price. most of the people posting the links probably cant afford one anyways.

toshiba and sony both make very strong computers if you want something with a brand name. otherwise i would recommend building it yourself. if you know the specs just look it up on tigerdirect or something similar. better to buy one that is built then to piece it together from differant vendors.
