Trends analysis: Sexual/pornography related Web searching is decreasing

"United States federal prosecutors recently, as of 2006, requested that the major Web search engines, Yahoo, American Online (AOL), MSN and Google provide a sampling of their search queries and indexes of Web sites, in order to allow the examination of various aspects of pornographic searching and retrieval. This paper examines studies that have analyzed Web search logs to determine the level of sexual or pornographic searches on publically available Web search engines from 1997 to 2005. Results show that sexual or pornographic queries have declined as a proportion of all Web queries since 1997 and currently represented less than four percent of Web queries."

Can you believe it?

lol,
they're not too good with math are they
I'm not sure who they want to fool, but percentage means shit.
The actuall number of porn queries increased only that there are many
other mainstream searches, so obviously the percentage is smaller.

That doesn't make sense... There are way way way more people using the internet now than in 1997... So search results would've INCREASED...

The volume has increased (including the volume of porn related searches), but people are now also using the interweb to look for a lot more mainstream stuff.

Why would federal prosecutors want to know the percentage of sexual
searches ? What would they use this for?

Is it so they can use it against people because then they can say that searching for porn is abnormal because it's a small percentage?

yeah I mean..chances are your mum and your grandma use the net by this day and age...they probably aint surfing for porn... (but send them my way if they are heh heh!) plus as people are getting smarter with using the web and search engines they're not as likely to type in the boring 'free porn' and 'free sex pics' keywords, instead they'll tap in exactly what they're looking for... you know 'black chubby midget fisters free pics' etc etc.. I know I get a lot of searches for specific models names... ;)

People who use search engines to look for porn are idiots. All they are going to find is a load of spam results which have little to do with what they are actually searching for.

It's pretty obvious the current U.S. government has given up on trying to improve the country, and will continue to use diversion as the main political tactic at least through the end of this administration.... and possibly into the next.

I am also sharing this kind of opinion, but still.. I cant believe that the total number would be decreasing anyway - at least not if I count the awesome increase of new people connecting to internet everyday.. or is it not that many these days?

If it's accurate, perhaps porn has saturated the web more since then and surfers do less searching becuase they find the resources/sites that satisfy them quicker and more often now.

Total BS. I think it was a recent Time magazine - they showed the top 10 search terms - "Adult" was number 1 and it far outpaced number 2.

They simply aggregated everything into "Adult" - I guess Time isn't comfortable printing "Anal Fisting"

Some of you just don't get it!
It's the percentage of searches for porn that is smaller overall, not the number of searches (which is probably still growing).
Just think of it. Are you not looking up for more things on the internet now than a couple years ago? Now you can shop, check the weather, read the news, do your online banking and yada yada.....just more things internet is useful for now.

much claps to Devilporn for hitting it right on the mark... this report isn't saying that people are searching for adult content LESS only that they are using the internet for MORE! And with the kids of today growing up using the computer for everything it is unlikely that particular pattern will change when they reach adulthood. Cheers!

The internet has grown enormously since 1997.

Sure the percentage of porn searches is down, but look at the absolute number of searches and surfers!

Statistics lie.

Even though many of my friends browse porn, they still use the internet mostly for other things like downloading music/movies, checking news, play games, pay their bills, chat, etc...
I do believe that 4% is accurate

duh, of course it's decreased, the surfers don't have to go to Google to find porn, we took care of that. As soon as they boot up thheir PCs at least 4 pop-ups guide them to a TGP, MGP, webcam, and a dating site. Then they launch their browser which home page (for their own convininence) we have changed to a porn site...

what would the World do without us?

The rule-of-thumb is that 62% of statistics are just made up on the spot - but only 28% of people know that.
