there's a tuning gadget you can buy... or by listening to a familiar song you know and hear if your guitar pitch is tuned to that song... for example you knew that song starts in A chord. then try hitting A chord and listen if it has the same pitch... but it works if you have nice listening skills...

For classical guitar I start with this

For electric, a digital guitar tuner.

I think you may be able to find tuning software if you look for it. Or get someone that plays to teach you, it's the fastest way.

Tune the 1st string (when you're holding it.. it's the low e string.. the top one) to the second string while holding the 5th fret on that first string. Pick the first string while holding it down on the 5th fret and compare it to the second string wide open.

Do the same thing with the second. Hold down the second string on the 5th fret and compare it to the 3rd string wide open.. Keep doing this all the way down EXCEPT the 4th string... on that one you will want to hold it down on the 4th fret and compare it to the 5th string... then from there on out you go back to the 5th string.

Got it? hehehe

Actually I told you that wrong... the first string is considered the 6th string so I was backwards.. but make sure you learn how to do that anyway cuz you can do it on the fly.

Here is a tool for you http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/onlinetuner.html

to do it by ear and without a tuner do as follows

from top E string (big one lol) to bottom E string (little one)

top E - put finger on the 5th fret and pick that string than the string below it... tune till the sound the same

A string: String below top E string - put your finger on the 5th fret and pick that string than the string below it... tune till the sound the same

D string: String below the A string - put your finger on the 5th fret and pick that string than the string below it... tune till the sound the same

G string: String below the D string - put your finger on the 4th fret and pick that string than the string below it... tune till the sound the same

B string: String below top G string - put your finger on the 5th fret and pick that string than the string below it... tune till the sound the same

buy a tuner until your used to doing it
get used to chord sounds and when you feel you know a song inside out play that through if the chords dont sound right keep playing the song and altering until it sounds right

You can go to a music store and buy a tuner pretty cheap and tune it that way :-)

this is good shit. i have pretty good pitch being a dj and all, this is a smaller guitar that i bought just so we can fuck around with it by the campfire and shit and sing really bad songs. since its a smaller one i don't think that it will tune the same.

It'll tune the same! You need to know how to do it so that when someones kid jacks with your guitar and winds up one of your knobs, you can still salvage your tuning and continue singing bad songs by the campfire hehe

If I don't have a fork or a digital tuner, I put on a song and tune it to that. Typically a song I already know how to play so I can find the E.
