What's up with new cars and the auto locking doors?

Am I the only one who hates riding in a 4 door car because now that automakers have gone to the auto-locking doors, every time I ride in the back of the car I get locked inside. I'm not talking about the child safety locks, I am talking about the "anti-carjacking or whyever the hell else they did it" system. Are there any cars out there that give you the choice, kinda like how you can shut off the passenger airbags in trucks? I know there is a lot of operator error and I'm sure many of you are saying "why doesn't he just manually unlock the door before he opens it" and that is very easy to say but when you are actually in the car, you forget once the driver parks that your door is locked or better yet, you are in the front passenger seat with let's say some groceries in the back seat and you get out of the car, go to open the rear door and it is locked. Then you have to open the front passenger door again and hit the unlock all button to open the freaking rear door. Ok...I'm done...can anyone guess that I just rode in the rear passenger space of somebody's car when I went to lunch....

They started doing that back in the mid 80's Josh. Think Chrysler was on of the first on the New Yorkers. Some of them auto unlock once you put the car in park or shut it off though.

I guess it's not "new"....it's just in every car you buy with power locks nowadays versus only in a few upper end, carjack targets a decade ago.

Yeah you can set it all in the cady. I got mine set to lock when you hit 15mph and unlock once you put it in park. You can set a few different combinations in the computer settings though

A couple months ago I was headed to Vegas for the XBiz show. I decided to get an early start.

I stopped at Starbucks for some fuel for me, then to the gas station to get fuel for the car.

I got out of the car to start pumping gas, then opened the door to get my coffee. When the car was full I went to go back in the car only to discover that all the doors were now locked! I had not done anything that should have caused the doors that were unlocked 3 minutes earlier to be locked now, but sure enough . . . . with my key in the ignition.

My early departure was delayed by about an hour due to that, and I will not get out of my car if the key is in the ignition . . . I get very paranoid at carwashes now.

my car doors will not lock if the car is off and the keys are in the ignition. It has saved me from calling a locksmith a few times when the above scenerio has happened to me.

p.s. baddog... I always used to carry a spare key in my wallet just for such an occasion before I had this car. Also something that has saved me a time or two.

the key for the Charger would be very uncomfortable in my wallet
