mpg is just a file extension .mpg
.mp3 is a file extension of format mpeg 3 and so on and so on and so on noone wins the bet, they are both acceptable |

MPEG1 or MPEG2 format have the file extension of .MPG or .MPEG. They are both pretty much the same container of data.
