Protect Your Cellphone

For some reason cell phone companies don't tell you this, but i just found it out and seems pretty useful.

If your cell phone gets stolen, the person who stole it simply needs to put in a new sim card and can use it. But what cell phone companies don't tell you (and I am not sure why they don't) is that every phone has a unique serial #, and if you know this serial #, you can tell your phone company to block the use of that phone if it is stolen, even switching the sim card will not make it work if it is blocked by the unique serial #.

To see your phones 15 digit serial # type in the following: *#06#

Then your phones # will be displayed, write that # down, if you phone is ever stolen, you can prevent the person who stole it from using it. It won't get your phone back, but still, it's nice to know that the person who stole it can't use it.

Also, if more people know this, it's less likely phones will be stolen in the future.

ah, ok.

I think the reason they don't tell you is because they like when your phone gets stolen, not only do you have to purchase a new phone, but you have to sign up for a new contract as well to get the special phone pricing. So if people stop stealing them, they'll lose out on that.

fuckers.

Don't know, the information given to me didn't state what phone, and it worked on my Razor. I am guessing it's a standard thing with all phones.

That's weird, it should work, are you sure you dialed it right? *#06#

Just found this info on Wikipedia:

The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) is a number unique to every GSM and UMTS mobile phone. It is usually found printed on or underneath the phone's battery and can also be found by dialling the sequence *#06# into the phone.

The IMEI number is used by the GSM network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used to stop a stolen phone from accessing the network. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to "ban" the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless, regardless of whether the phone's SIM is changed.

every cell phone today has it's imei. but after the phone is stolen, you can change it's imei with the flashing, but very few people know how to do that, so you'd better write it down. so, just type in *#06# and write that code down, just in any case!

If you have the original box then that often has the IMEI printed on it as well.

It can also be different about different standards. Do you think it is about GSM? I like this think and will learn the number as far as i get one
