What is the difference between Holland and the Netherlands?

Can someone explain the difference to me?

as far as I know, they are the same thing, so why two different names?

Holland is a provence...(State) in the Netherlands
We have 12 "States" North and South Holland are 2 of them.
Often Holland is being used because for some reason the Netherlands (which means The Lowlands) is too difficult.

Lowlands is because our country is below sea level....we have
"Dikes" to protect us from the Water.

Dutch are Nederlanders but since most canīt pronounce that
they have come up with Dutch...

And about the "Dikes" probably itīs spelled as Dykes...I dunno
there is this story that once a guy named "Hans" stuck his thumb
in a Dyke and save a whole city from drowning....

There was a hole in the Dyke....which makes sense offcourse
....a really wet hole that was

Isn't "AMERICA" the entire AMERICAN continent?

North and South America.

Yes that is obvious.

But still there is no country named "America" nor is there a continent named "America". (Only South-America, Central-America and North-America).

"I am an European" indicates that you are from the continent "EUROPE".

Would someone from Brasil be able to call himself an American?

Oh well just wondering.
