Top Democrat calls Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez a "thug"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - One of President George W. Bush's fiercest political opponents at home took his side on Thursday, calling Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez a "thug" for his remark that Bush is like the devil.

"Hugo Chavez fancies himself a modern day Simon Bolivar but all he is an everyday thug," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference, referring to Chavez' comments in a U.N. General Assembly speech on Wednesday.

"Hugo Chavez abused the privilege that he had, speaking at the United Nations," said Pelosi, a frequent Bush critic. "He demeaned himself and he demeaned Venezuela."

Simon Bolivar led the fight for independence against Spanish rule in several South American countries in the early 19th century and is cited by Chavez as a political model.

I was reading about Bolivar last week. Pretty interesting character. He "free'd" many SA countries from Spanish rule.

World leaders are like mafia bosses.. it is just cliqs that run countries and call each other names.. ha ha, like little kids, except with really big guns and a ton of money.

Bush will call him a name no doubt in the future.. like evil or... a bad man.. maybe a .. "thug"? hah.. At least that "thug" takes care of the American people more than ANY American politican ever will.

I wonder, if there was such remark about Chavez's resemblance with Simon Bolivar (who was struggling against Spain for freedom ) do they recognize by that that Venesuela and other nereby country are under rule of America and have no freedom?

Interesting quote coming from a US politician - they are usually the first to trot out the "labelling" and assumptions about other people - who often don't even live in the country where they were elected.

This was the same country (the US) who invaded Latin America with a view to annexing it to the US for cheap labor - exactly the model Simon Bolivar tried to stop in earlier times.

From the efforts of Bolivar and others came some of the oldest democracies in the world. Perhaps Nancy Pelosi can take a lesson from history - a subject that seems to be hard to learn when in political positions in the US.

It may also be helpful to look inwards and examine what represents "thuggery" in an international scenario before offering stupid comments.

PS Ironic the cheap labor that was sought a few centuries ago is now a source of concern.

BTW... On the subject of thuggery...

Perhaps Ms Pelosi would like to address her government's role in real thuggery and torture and why the elected President wishes to "reinterperate" the Geneva Convention to provide immunity from prosecution of CIA officers and others.

This may be more relevant than Chavez's comments about Bush being a "devil" and supercedes Pelosi's comments about Chavez being a thug.

BBC - Thursday, 21 September 2006

Iraq torture 'worse after Saddam'

Torture may be worse now in Iraq than under former leader Saddam Hussein, the UN's chief anti-torture expert says.

Manfred Nowak said the situation in Iraq was "out of control", with abuses being committed by security forces, militia groups and anti-US insurgents.

Bodies found in the Baghdad morgue "often bear signs of severe torture", said the human rights office of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq in a report.

The wounds confirmed reports given by refugees from Iraq, Mr Nowak said.

He told journalists at a briefing in Geneva that he had yet to visit Iraq, but he was able to base his information on autopsies and interviews with Iraqis in neighbouring Jordan.

"What most people tell you is that the situation as far as torture is concerned now in Iraq is totally out of hand," the Austrian law professor said.

"The situation is so bad many people say it is worse than it has been in the times of Saddam Hussein," he added.

Brutal methods

The UN report says detainees' bodies often show signs of beating using electrical cables, wounds in heads and genitals, broken legs and hands, electric and cigarette burns.

Bodies found at the Baghdad mortuary "often bear signs of severe torture including acid-induced injuries and burns caused by chemical substances".

Many bodies have missing skin, broken bones, back, hands and legs, missing eyes, missing teeth and wounds caused by power drills or nails, the UN report says.

Victims come from prisons run by US-led multinational forces as well as by the ministries of interior and defence and private militias, the report said.

As said in the previous post - look inwards.

Shit.. does it ever stop???

Back to the subject of thuggery and threats - and another sample of how awesomely infantile Nancy Pelosi's comments about Chavez are.

Richard Armitage's negotiating capability is limited to threatening to bomb Pakistan back to the stone age. Nice coming from the biggest shouters about speading "freedom and democracy" over the world. When will they learn to shut the fuck up and get a clue??

Quote:
US 'threatened to bomb' Pakistan

The threat was alleged to have come from Richard Armitage
The United States threatened to bomb Pakistan "back to the stone age" unless it joined the fight against al-Qaeda, President Pervez Musharraf says.

General Musharraf said the warning was delivered by former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage to Pakistan's intelligence director.

"I think it was a very rude remark," Mr Musharraf told CBS television.

Pakistan agreed to side with the US, but Gen Musharraf said it did so based on his country's national interest.

"One has to think and take actions in the interest of the nation, and that's what I did," he said.

'Ludicrous' requests

The extracts from the CBS show 60 Minutes, which will run on Sunday, were released on the same day that the White House praised Pakistan for its co-operation in America's "war on terror".

Gen Musharraf is due to meet US President George W Bush at the White House on Friday.

The US allegedly ordered Pakistan to crush dissent

The Pakistani president said that, following the attacks of 11 September 2001, the US made some "ludicrous" demands of Pakistan.

"The intelligence director told me that Mr Armitage said, 'Be prepared to be bombed. Be prepared to go back to the Stone Age'," he said.

The US envoy also insisted that Pakistan suppress domestic expression of support for attacks on the United States, he said.

"If somebody's expressing views, we cannot curb the expression of views," Gen Musharraf said.

Mr Armitage also allegedly demanded that Pakistan allow the US to use its border posts as staging points for the war on Afghanistan.

Pakistan's support was considered crucial in the defeat of Afghanistan's Taleban government, which Pakistan had helped to bring to power.

Sure... and who is controlling the UN??? It's not any democratic organization as some claim - and that is part of the Chavez objection, as well as the reason for objection by many other countries.

Sadly the US is more of a freak show internationally than any other country or organization.

I wouldnt put my money on hugo thats for sure. The thing about this guy is he is just a gimmick, and in the long run he will not accomplish much down there. I wont get into a huge debate about this, but his golf course stunt was enough for me to realize he has no real plan for improving conditions down there, all he has done so far is create publicity, and they need a shitload more then just publicity to bring them up to speed.

The same lies and BS day in and day out with this third world, broke, asswipe. I hate the American President, blah, blah, blah. I hate the American Government, blah, blah, blah. I hate the American people, blah, blah, blah. I hate America, blah, blah, blah. So predictable.

BTW this is the same asswipe that volunteered his services to assassinate the President. He is an enemy of America thus he is my personal enemy. Fortunately he is a harmless, broke dick and is not allowed entry into my country.
