Yeah, I remember Pioneer chicken. In 1993, Popeyes signed a deal with Pioneer chicken to convert 60 of their west coast restaurants into Popeyes restaurants. That's why all the Pioneer chicken restaurants are gone now.

damn this thread i knew would come back to haunt me - i so want some popeye's right now. some bigger company should buy them out and expand and take on KFC head on - cuz there aren't many Popeye's and from what people are saying they aren't in the best parts of towns.

1. OH Yes! I remember eating pioneer chicken out in San Jose..I was a kid so I can't remember the taste but i know it was good and salty..

2. Even though popeyes chicken pieces are small, KFC's pieces are some of the SMALLEST pieces of chicken available...Church's has the biggest hormone fed pieces.

3. Church's chicken is owned by the same corporation that owns Popeyes chicken...I know cause I called popeye's 800 number to complain about those slow muthafuckas at one of Milwaukee's popeyes and the machine said press 1 for church's and press 2 for popeyes.

4. And even though Popeyes are in bad neighborhoods, I have NEVER seen any problems at a fried chicken restaurant...We're only there for one thing, and that's to buy and eat chicken...You think they're going to put down their 12 piece to fuck with somebody that they don't even know? Hell no.

5. And the great majority of them are clean inside...Especially since you can see the chicken being served from the basket.

My stomach is growling for freshly grilled Mary Jo's extra spicy BBQ chicken (the secret is the dark beer marinade and the cumin) with lots of jalapeno bits - sour cream sauce on the side, with fixins of red coleslaw, green peas and sweet corn, and mashed sweet taters. Then drink it with ice cold dry cerveza that just washes everything down. Oh God. The place is 300 miles away. This is hell...

We got a Popeyes up here and I have yet to try it.

The problem's not at the Popeyes itself, its getting to and from. I only go if my token black friend wants to take me out to lunch.

Actually AFC, the company that owns Popeyes, has been a standalone company for a couple of years now. Popeyes was founded by Al Copeland, also of Copelands Restaurants and a famous cigarette boat racer. Churchs (blech) and Cinnabon brands are no longer owned by the corporation.

My vote is for Popeyes spicy for #1... KFC extra crispy will do in a pinch.

The biscuits are different at both, but I like them equally well. Mashed potatoes and gravy goes to KFC and red beans and rice of course to Popeyes.
