Of course its possible, depending on the level of advancement your soul is on. Its not easy though and certainly if you're totally closed minded like most on this thread you can't do it nor can you comprehend the principles of it yet.
The concept simplified is the soul's self awareness is where You are really existing, not your blob of physical matter. Since that immortal self awareness energy is linked to the mortal physical body, when the body dies, the connection to that particular physical incarnation is ended and over with. It's all about learning and growing your soul to a more divine state. Unfortunately, the lessons happen in the painful planes of the physical realms. Death actually returns you to a more peaceful and pain free realm, since you no longer have to deal with anything physical, its back to being just a state of pure spiritual energy without form, but you still have a self awareness. Each incarnation temporarily muffles a portion of your past awareness. This is necessary to prevent the self from overwhelming itself with all that "was" in past incarnations, though you can often sense past lives to an extent and especially sense it when you are reconnected again with a soul who you shared a relationship with once before.
The reality of life is that its not really real in the physical way most people understand it. This is why death isn't a loss like people think it is. It's more of a freeing of the self awareness once again from a particular physical plane back into its calm peaceful spiritual state.
Contacting souls on the other side involves de-energizing your physical realm connection and energizing your spiritual dimension connection so that your self charges up into a higher vibrational state of electromagnetic energy on which the spirtitual world exists. You don't talk like in the physical plane, its all self awareness to self awareness (like mind to mind but even beyond that). The higher you can release your self, the easier it is. The dream state we experience is close to this level which is why many people can communicate with their loved ones on the other side through this manner.
