Before your eyes.

It's just a card trick, but it was unreal, and to this day I have no idea how the fuck the guy did it (or even who he was).

I was in a local bar, this was maybe 12 or 13 years ago. I'm standing around with friends, drinking, flirting with the cute coat check girl..... and this average - a bit goofy looking guy - just sidles up and starts into his shpiel holding a deck of cards. I'm curiious so I play along.

It started out the usual way, he fans the deck and asks me to pick a card, don't show him, then slip it back in the deck, shuffle it etc. Then he starts trying to guess my card (10 of diamonds). He sifts through the deck, pulls up a card and says "This your card?"
I say "No"
He does this a few more times, each time getting it wrong.
He shakes his head as if confused as to why it's not working. My friends are snickering at him now. THEN.... he says "hmm, something's not right, I'll have to try something here..." and he inverts his hand over the deck and smacks the deck up into his hand with his other hand.
*SMACK*
He then hands me the deck and says "Find your card in there, make sure it's there"

I go sifting through the deck and can't see the 10 of diamonds anywhere. I look at him and say it's not there, he smiles and says "Look up"
I look up and there's my card, stuck about 8 feet off the floor, on the cieling. (we were standing in a spot in the bar where the cieling just happened to be lower than in other areas)
"Is that your card?"
I'm like "Yep, that be it"
The guy wasn't tall enough to reach up and retrieve the card. Me being 6'4", he asked me to get it for him, which I did.

Everyone within visual range of us was blown away, including me.

I offered to buy the guy a drink, and in fact everyone I was with offered him one, but he just thanked us for playing along and then blended back into the crowd and I never saw him again. Still don't know who the fuck he was, but that was on amazing trick.

There was no sticky tape on the card of any kind when I plucked it off the cieling. No glue, nothing. Just the card.

Okay, here's one more....

My mom told me this story when I was a kid. Back before I was born (like 1962-ish) my mom and dad were out to dinner, then to a lounge for some drinks and entertainment. There was a magician/piano player/hypnotist act (one man show). At a certain point in the evening there my mom started to feel ill... headachey, sick to her stomach, a bit dizzy even. She was about a minute away from calling it a night, but my dad coaxed her to stay just a bit longer.

The guy up on stage said he was about to hypnotize a certain few random people in the audience, and once he went into his dialogue sure enough, certain people start to fall asleep in the audience. My dad, amazed by this, looks over at my mom about to say "did you see that?" and finds that my mom too has been hypnotized and is asleep.

The hypnotist makes several suggestions to these people, one of which was something like "If you've not been feeling well tonight you will wake up feeling 100% better and refreshed..."

After he snapped his fingers and woke everyone up, my mom's ill sicky feeling was completely gone. The old man couldn't believe it, and she had to be convinced that it even happened.... but apparently they were able to go on and enjoy the rest of the evening, with her feeling totally fine.

I find shit like that quite amazing.

Often times, it's the power of suggestion that makes you pick your "random" card though. Mind control is some crazy shit. Sometimes it's something as small as just a flicker of the card or that card sticking out from the fan a fraction of an inch that can sway your random pick to the card he wants you to pick. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If it didn't work, he would have faded back into the crowd anyway. No loss for him. But if it did work...you're still talking about it 12 years later. He gotcha.

I was watching for that shit though. Whenever anyone pulls this kind of thing on me I always go for what I know to be a completely random card, not one they are "trying" to get me to choose. Same with putting it back in the deck, it was done in such a way that it would be impossible to control. (or so it would seem)

Guess you guys had to be there. I'm no dummy and wouldn't easily fall for such things as you're describing. Your suggestions are all good but just not quite applicable to this instance.

On TV earlier today I watched a magician do another "lame" card trick.... On a crowded bus he gets up, starts his shpiel to the 40-odd people riding along. He gets a random girl, one he has never met before, to pull a random card out of the deck (a fresh deck that he let her shuffle as much as she liked) then he asked her to take a pen and sign her name on that card.

She then slipped the card back into the deck, and was again allowed to shuffled the deck.

He then took the entire deck and THREW all the cards at the inside of the front window of the bus, after which all the cards flew, bounced off the glass etc, but one card remained... stuck on the glass at the end.... HER SIGNED CARD.

Here's the real kicker: He asked the bus driver to stop, whereupon he got out, asked the girl to get off the bus with him, showed her the card.... IT WAS STUCK ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE WINDOW... not the inside.

Now, I would LOVE for some of you self-proclaimed brainiacs to have seen that first-hand, then sit there and try to explain how he did it.

Well, but you were in a dark bar, probably after a few beers, it's not exactly impossible that he could have switched the full deck that he showed you, for a deck that contained only 10 of diamonds as he turned the cards over...

I know you will probably say, no way that is what happened, I was watching his hands all the time, etc... but these guys are pros, all you need is some hand waving, some distracting story to go along, and you can turn a quarter into a pigeon right in front of your eyes....

so i start telling him he really sucks at magic. he asks my friend if he was being honest etc. then says "you had to have cheated. you probably tricked me and still have the card on you. check your back pocket" and there was the card.

he NEVER came even close to my friends pocket.

we were totally floored and spent a lot of time trying to figure out how the hell he did that.

He could have done a lot of things woj. Am I telling you it was actual "magic"? No. I realize there's a trick to it. I'm just saying you had to have been there. There was no visible way he could have pulled the kinds of things being suggested. I'm saying I don't know how he did it, and quite frankly... I really don't care how he did it. I just enjoyed it for what it was... a kickass card trick that blew a lot of people's minds.

And no, at that point in the evening it was early, we were not drunk.

That guy on TV earlier today that I mentioned, he did this trick you're describing, almost exactly.

His victim was Ice-Cube (the actor), and it was vouched for by him that there was no prior arrangement of any kind between them. Of course people will doubt it, because some people doubt every fucking thing they see and hear no matter who is talking or how credible the person is. But that's another discussion entirely.

Anyways, he went through the trick just like you said, but the end kicker was that the card wasn't just found on Ice-Cube's person, IT WAS INSIDE HIS WALLET. And.... the deck was pre-checked by Ice-Cube, the card he chose was no longer in the deck.

Freaky.

Seriously, I don't care how "lame" some find it, I would love to be able to do card tricks of that calibre.

I used to work with a guy who had an amazing arsenal of card tricks... We asked him to show us new ones every day and he would show us one maybe once a week. All his stuff was flawless and we were all amazed, he used to do all the crazy stuff like rip your card up and then have it appear in your pocket and stuff.

Too bad he wasn't as good of a programmer as he was a parlour magician.

A friend of mine who makes his living as a showman regulary performs the following "trick" with over a 90% success rate.......

Every day for 7 days prior to one of his performances he purchases and reads cover to cover a daily newspaper and memorises every word, ( yes his memory really is that good ).

On the night of his show he randomly picks 7 members of the audience to come up on stage and to each he gives 1 copy of the 7 newspapers that he has purchased and read in the previous 7 days.

Next the showman focus's his mind for a moment before speaking out loud the sentence that he belives is contained in the sealed envelope and then asks the person holding up the envelope to open it and tell him whether he is right or wrong.

In at least 90% of the occasions he performs this trick he gets it word for word accurate , ( the participant who's envelope is selected is then asked to confirm what he had written to show there has been no slight of hand involved )

My friend has been performing this trick for several years now, ( I can assure anyone that there is no slight of hand involved ), yet still cannot fully explain how he does it, however he does suspect that there is some sort of telepathy or thought suggestion involved operating at a subconscious level.

He sifts through the deck, pulls up a card and says "This your card?" I say "No" He does this a few more times, each time getting it wrong. He shakes his head as if confused as to why it's not working. My friends are snickering at him now. THEN.... he says "hmm, something's not right, I'll have to try something here..." and he inverts his hand over the deck and smacks the deck up into his hand with his other hand. SMACK He then hands me the deck and says "Find your card in there, make sure it's there" I go sifting through the deck and can't see the 10 of diamonds anywhere. I look at him and say it's not there, he smiles and says "Look up" I look up and there's my card, stuck about 8 feet off the floor, on the cieling. (we were standing in a spot in the bar where the cieling just happened to be lower than in other areas) "Is that your card?" I'm like "Yep, that be it" The guy wasn't tall enough to reach up and retrieve the card. Me being 6'4", he asked me to get it for him, which I did. Everyone within visual range of us was blown away, including me. I offered to buy the guy a drink, and in fact everyone I was with offered him one, but he just thanked us for playing along and then blended back into the crowd and I never saw him again.
