Samsung. Hands down. You will pay a tiny bit more for them, but the quality can't be beat. I was walking through BestBuy the other day and did the comparison myself. It was a no brainer.

Just check out the site. www.samsung.com

we just grabbed a 46" 3 lcd sony one. Not the best looking but the price was nice and for our upstairs living room it worked perfect. Sit far enough back and you won't see the screen effect.

Sharp Aquos.....Love it. The only regret is that I didn't go with a larger screen (got the 32").....for no reason except bigger is better. The next one I get will also be an Aquos

Awesome! This is my fourth HDTV and second Toshiba. Hands down the best; easily beating my Sharp LCD and Panasonic plasma and Toshiba tube. SD programing looks better than on others (Sharp is close) and, when fed native 1080i or 720p, blows away anything I've seen in terms of clarity, color accuracy, and detail / resolution. Two HDMI ports is an increasingly important feature. In general, ports are easier to access then most sets (when wallmounted). TVGOS - while not something I use a lot is well implemented. True, without BlueRay you can't feed it 1080p, but native resolution makes 1080i look awesome (I assume because the scaling/conversion is cleaner).

Drawbacks?
Black levels equal plasma within a tight viewing angle, but do drop off significantly and quickly. Like every new set, it comes out of the box cranked way too high (brightness, backlight, color, color temp). Basic controls allow you to set it pretty reasonably but I plan to invest in a professional tune. Cabinet looks a little cheaper than it should, but that's getting increasingly common as prices come down.

Bottom line: Highly recommended!

Toshiba makes great TVs. I have heard good things about the new Samsungs as well.

Bravia X series , right now it's the best out. Make sure it's the X series, as for other brands, they have new models coming out in a couple of months. I'm waiting for the 46 X series to go on sale here. Or get a new generation LCD from another manufacturer in 2-3 months.

The new Samsung units with LED backlighting if you want the best quality available. The larger screens are horrendously expensive with this tech, but the 40? is fairly reasonable for the quality increase (about 3k for the 40). Not sure if these units are commercially available yet.
