Dental insurance for self employed people?

For the life of me, I can't find a decent dental insurance plan for someone who is self employed.

Something that is reasonably priced, and would go in effect right away or within 30 days. I am in Florida.

    Any help is really appreciated!

i just pay with cash. but i dont have any fillings or anything. just a checkup and cleaning couple times a year. its like $100/visit or something.

i searched for dental ins. a while ago and like you, couldnt find something decent. however, contact blue cross/blue sheild, they sent me (by request) a catalog of plans for dental and medical.

I would like to know too. Most insurance agents told me to put aside $$$ every month for dental work. Also, make sure you take a look at how long your waiting period is for certain things. I looked at one plan that said I had to wait 2 years to have a filling covered!

Beckie, yeah, the thing is, I think I may need a root canal soon. I wonder how long the wait might be if I get insurance and then wait to have the root canal.

Would I be better off just paying for it myself?

a lot of major insurance companies offer dental, but it is just a discount plan, you can get "dental discounts"

We use www.ameriplanusa.com for our dental discount, $19 for my wife and I and we get up to 50% off

good luck on finding a true "copay" type insurance plan though

you can always incorporate and get some employees, then sign up with Delta Dental

There's no such thing. With these dental "plans" for individuals you'll be seeing a different dentist each time if you're lucky - most just start at the clinic places to get some experience.

I had 6 crowns done recently. 0% interest for a year. No, it's not cheap, but I got to pick MY dentist, who I know is good, to work on something as important as my teeth

Peaches, your saying the discount dental plans are not good?

They provide you with a list of dentists that you could get the discounts with, and you can choose between them, so in a way you do have a choice, right?

I joined my local Chamber of Commerce, but they don't offer dental. Just regular medical/auto.

While waiting for my dentist appointment one day, I was watching their TV with this guy talking about how prices of dental work has gone up so much since the 1950's, but the insurance hasn't adjusted to the current prices. This is so true...

Most dentists offer a credit card with 0%. It's from Care Credit and it's only for dental work (I think some other type of work, but you can't use it like a credit card - for anything).

I was married before to a government employee and they even had crappy dental plans. I got most of my work done before I had to give up the 50% coverage and still need a few things done. I pay cash for it all now.

Would I be better off just paying for it myself?
Ouch... I feel bad for you. I hate root canals. Every plan was different, but some were even a 6 month wait. I would see about that Care Credit card if you need something done that quick. Root canals are nasty.

I have found the discount plans are fuck jobs , with lots of up selling. I wish there was a straight dental plan like my medical insurance.

I find it best to pay cash for dentist.

Also I pay cash because I like to pick the dentist I use. For major things almost every dentist ive been too gave a nice discount for a full payment.

we have used Ameriplan for almost 6 years now, they have never tried to upsell us and we get anywhere from a 20%-50% discount every time we go

Blue Cross has a really good plan out here in Cali...i pay like $10 a month or something really cheap like that. free checkups, x-rays and flouride and big discounts on any work done. i can't figure out for the life of me how the dentist makes any $ on what i pay.
