Video Compression Cluster Farm (PIC)

I have been increasing the size of our compression cluster a bit lately and I thought I would post a picture here.

We are waiting on the sliding glass doors to be installed so we don't have to hear the fans.

We currently have the ability to rip and compress over 700 DVD's per month. We are currently booked into next year but the new machines should speed those jobs up a bit.

On the wall

18 Macs (7 Dual G5 and 11 Quad Intel Xeon)
8 Terrabytes of storage (adding another 3 this week)
10 APC batteries
Managed Linksys 48 port Gigabit switch

Oh no doubt I got a tour of Mojohosts facility in Miami recently and it makes this look very ghetto. However for a boutique video editing and compression shop it aint bad ;)

Yep

My wife Claire edits in Final Cut Pro so we do some raw tape editing as well.

But mostly big compression jobs for paysites. We do mainly DVD, Mini DV and HD ripping and compression.

Cool setup. I just LOVE those linksys switches.....dirtcheap and has every
feature you could possible want in a switch, vlans, trunking, 96 Gbps backplane
(SWR2048 10/100/1000), handles all network layers, QoS, traffic shaping.....
I never tried them till very recently and from what I've seen so far I'm a very
happy camper. 600 euros they cost here....as a comparable real cisco you'd
have to flap out 4.5K euros......I'm still a bit sceptic about reliability but I
guess that's something I'll have to wait and see. But at such low price you
can easily buy a few spares just in case

I'm pro-mac, so don't get me wrong, but, uhm, why are you using G5s when PCs are cheap commodity shit and can run rings around them? Are you using some specific QuickTime MP4 or Compressor?

Final Cut Pro, that's another story.
