Do you think if the top older rock bands came out now that they would still make it?

Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Doors
Nirvana
Beetles

Would they make it now as well?

I'm more curious to know what bands of today will still be around and/or popular in 20 years. Most modern music/rock seems to have no staying power. I can't even think of a "great" band from the 90's.

No. Old rock was about the rock - not whining about writing a poem, reciting it to a chick, and having her kick you in the balls and take your mascara.

Nope music evolves based on kids. They would be popular with their own generation but the older you get the more unpopular you get. I guess it would be how can a 40 year old relate to kids?

Definitely the best band of the '90s Pearl Jam

There were none and the examples given show there were none. The few examples Chaze gave barely scratches the surface of what we listened to in the 60s and 70s. That would be a list of 50 or more bands.

No way. Would you like to name anyone today with the talent of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Pete Townsend, Roger Waters, Neil Young, Ray Davies, Paul Simon, Dave Bowie, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana plus many nany more. I will not even bother to list the bands.

Today the music industry is controlled by marketing men, they are not looking for mega stars like the old bands or Madonna. They are looking for little bands they can control, to make more money than the band and drop and move on to the next flavor of the month. Look back and see how the bands in the 60s and 70s rose to fame and see the difference. The Beatles were started by a guy who owned a record shop.

Plus the most important thing today is the video, more thought and money goes into it than the actual music. The idea of the video is to fuel MTV type stations, not radio stations.

No sadly the music of today will not compare and it's unlikely to ever compare again. Different world.

Not all, but most of the "old" bands got where they did after years of live performances. Just as for comedians, live shows are a great training ground and also an excellent way to filter out the no-talent hopefuls.

So yes, they would obviously be playing different music, but I'm sure the majority could succeed again.

Talent is talent and musical genious is musical genious.

Maybe not as big, but somehow they would have made something.
