On the wall

18 Macs (7 Dual G5 and 11 Quad Intel Xeon)
8 Terrabytes of storage (adding another 3 this week)
10 APC batteries
Managed Linksys 48 port Gigabit switch

Damn man, that is fucking badass. I almost like that picture better than a one with pictures of hot new talent.

Cool setup. I just LOVE those linksys switches.....dirtcheap and has every
feature you could possible want in a switch, vlans, trunking, 96 Gbps backplane
(SWR2048 10/100/1000), handles all network layers, QoS, traffic shaping.....
I never tried them till very recently and from what I've seen so far I'm a very
happy camper. 600 euros they cost here....as a comparable real cisco you'd
have to flap out 4.5K euros......I'm still a bit sceptic about reliability but I
guess that's something I'll have to wait and see. But at such low price you
can easily buy a few spares just in case :winkwink:

:thumbsup

I'm pro-mac, so don't get me wrong, but, uhm, why are you using G5s when PCs are cheap commodity shit and can run rings around them? Are you using some specific QuickTime MP4 or Compressor?

Final Cut Pro, that's another story. :thumbsup

WiredGuy 09-12-2006 05:51 PM

Wow, I see you spent your share of the P2PAds buyout on that wall, hehe. That's awesome Brad, quite a data center for home use! You using any more servers off site or is your entire operation based at home?

I don't know why he is using Macs, but after seeing some of the clustering-features present in OSX, I know why I would use them.
And the new Mac Pro are some pretty impressive machines as well and not that expensive when you consider the quality of assembling, support, reliability, ...

sniperwolf 09-12-2006 06:48 PM

im guessing it can, i have a 12,000 btu window unit added to my room - with the central air set at 76 and the window unit at 68 the room can push 70 on an extra hot day but generally is 68-69

my dual core intel 3.4s are all overclocked a bit and run low 40's, hdd temps are low 30's

i worry the cops will show up one day wondering if i have an herb garden because of all the juice i pull

Vitasoy 09-12-2006 11:55 PM

Ok that is damn sexy

You said it Mark.

Many people ask why i use macs and the answer is so simple. Clustering.
