    What do you think about Iranian President Mohammed Khatami?

    He's going to be at Harvard giving a speech on the 10th and 11th, The Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney said he's not providing protection to former Iranian President Mohammed Khatami.

    I don't understand why they are going to let him speak at Harvard as they wouldn't let the former president Ronald Reagan speak there.


    Does anyone here live in Massachusetts know more about this?

                          How the hell is he going to come to one of the best colleges and speak on 9/11? Why should he be invited to speak when they wouldn't let Ronald Reagan among others speak there?

I think he, like Saddam Hussein, Milosevic, and the leaders of several other upstart countries in history, is overconfident in his power and is hell bent on taking his ego and his nation to the brink of ruin. (and possibly beyond)

                                          Other than that I don't know him personally. I'm sure he'd make a good drinking buddy.

                                              You referring to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - the acutal President of Iran??

                                              Mohammed Khatami is not the President of Iran as was stated in the thread title and first post. Khatami is an ex President of Iran obviously doing the lecture circuit.

                                              Khatami adopted a more moderate attitude in foreign policy and certainly more concilatory than in the past - despite a track record of agression being shown by certain countries.

                                              He sure don't have an ego problem CDS - he's actually a very intelligent guy with sense.

                                                                              Iran's Khatami calls for US talks

                                                                              Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has called for dialogue between the US and Iran.

                                                                              Mr Khatami, on a visit to the US, said relations between the two would improve only through talks, not threats.

                                                                              His call came as permanent members of the UN Security Council met in Berlin to discuss Iran's nuclear programme.

                                                                              Mr Khatami's visit has sparked protests from Jewish groups, Iranian exiles and some politicians who regard Tehran as a threat to the US.

                                                                              'Ostentatious leaders'

                                                                              During a speech on Thursday in Washington, the former leader called for greater understanding between East and West.

                                                                              He said talks between Washington and Tehran would "open the path to a better tomorrow and to rescue life from the claws of warmongers and violence-seekers and ostentatious leaders".

                                                                              In previous speeches during his two-week US tour he defended Iran's nuclear programme, which he insisted was peaceful.

                                                                              He said Tehran would consider suspending the programme if Western powers would talk without conditions.

                                                                              Mr Khatami - who was in power between 1997 and 2005 - was granted a visa by the US government, but is not meeting any officials during his visit.

                                                                              Later, he will speak at Harvard University and attend the United Nations in New York.
