Are you using a surge protector? God damnit you should be

So yeah...One of the employees hooked up one of the work laptops directly to the wall instead of thru a surge protector...That computer was wired into the main router...So the laptop got hit from the storm last night...knocked out the router (which knocked out the phone lines) which also knocked out a desktop and a laptop...

Of course everything else was on a surge protector...But doesn't help whenever the surges travel thru the network...

So the moral of the story...MAKE SURE everything is under a surge protector...

Oh the fun of running a business...Thank god for business insurance...

This has been a in your face public announcement

I always unplug my entire surge protector from the wall before big storms also.

On a related note, most of the time it's phone lines that are the conduit during a storm. So stay off the phone during storms, and get s protector that includes phone, cable and network jacks as well as AC.

What kind of fucking moron dosent use a surge protector?

I have everything on APC protectors or UPSs... hell, even the electric pencil sharpener is plugged into one. I registered all of them and kept all the reciepts and packaging. One day, I had a hit and it made it past the APC that the network laser printer (an HP 5si) was plugged into... but it got blocked by the APC unit that the CAT5 was run to before the switch, so it didnt take the whole thing down. APC bought me a brand new printer, no hassles at all. I was really impressed they stood behing the $50K insurance on connected equiptment for a $35 protector.

On a side note, my parents lost thier computer a couple of years ago when a surge came down the Comcast cable line. Blew the whole back of the modem out. Because Comcast installed the modem and provided a surge protector, my parents ended up taking Comcast to Arbitration claiming that the protector was defective. Comcast had to pay for the damage.

Yes and when you stay at a hotel room always remember to bring a surge protector. I learned the hard way by plugging directly in the wall of the holiday inn and bam the laptop harddrive was fried. I was angry!
