Canadians crossing into US.. question

Im really confused:

i read on one website that canadians travelling by car into the US MUST haveapassport

then when i visit the CBP website it says they can use a drivers license & birth certificate

so wtf?? i tried to call but it's a holiday so they are closed

Any Canadians have recent experience with border crossing?

(yes i'm australian but its for a friend whos travelling)

Right now, all that is needed is a photo ID (driver's license, health card) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate, citizenship card). A passport will be required in 2007.

Interesting.

I may as well go get that passport now, to avoid the rush in 2007.

Passport requirement is only in 2007. Its preferred to have a passport but they'll take a license and birth certificate.

I crossed into Buffalo at Peace Bridge last week - all they asked for was two pieces of photo I.D. (driver's license and health card kept them happy). We also cross at Rainbow Bridge into Niagara Falls, and they've never asked for a passport.

Passports won't start until at least 2007, and there's talk they'll likely go with a special photo I.D. card instead of passports anyway. I wouldn't waste my time and money gettin' a passport if you don't need it for other things.

you don't need a passport to go either way. there is discussion about passports and other ID cards... but no laws or rules have changed yet, i believe. whatever rules there will be they are almost always 100% recipricol, so it would apply to both sides as well.

12.31.2006 it starts where you need a passport for entry. This includes Bahammas, Canada, Mexico, etc.

Get at post office. Can take up to 6 months to get. Althought buddy in H.L.S. said they are processing them faster, so expect 2-4 months.

soo lame, it will be funny when it takes a huge fucking bite out of tourism, since half of the canadians that cross the border regularly do not have passports.

Actually more like most Americans do not. Or are going to shell out $90 per.
